🚀 Inspiration

SHIFTx was inspired by the struggles we and many teams face while working on large academic and technical projects — especially when relying on weak or unstable networks. We frequently encountered stalled uploads, corrupted files, and the headache of repeatedly resending the same data.

As remote collaboration continues to grow across universities and industries, reliable and secure data movement has become essential. However, most existing tools focus only on transferring files — not on ensuring continuity, collaboration, and resilience.

We saw a clear gap: 👉 Teams need a smarter system that understands the network, protects sensitive information, and enables collaboration while transfers are in progress.

That vision shaped SHIFTx: a resilient, secure, and collaborative file-transfer solution built for real-world constraints.

✅ What It Does

SHIFTx is a smart file-transfer and collaboration platform designed for unstable or low-bandwidth environments. It provides:

  • Secure, encrypted file transfers AES-256 encryption ensures data privacy from sender to receiver.

  • Resumable uploads/downloads If the connection breaks mid-transfer, it resumes from the exact point of interruption.

  • Adaptive performance The system dynamically adjusts chunk size and number of parallel uploads based on current bandwidth.

  • Priority-based processing “Urgent files first” — intelligent scheduling for faster delivery of critical data.

  • Built-in project collaboration Shared workspaces, comments on files, and real-time activity tracking — reducing back-and-forth communication.

  • Audit logs & reports Every action is tracked for accountability and traceability.

🛠 How We Built It

Tech Stack

  • Backend: Node.js with asynchronous I/O for high-concurrency transfers
  • Frontend: React with a live progress dashboard
  • Real-time features: WebSockets for instant status updates and messaging
  • Storage: AWS S3 & on-prem alternatives as needed
  • Database: PostgreSQL for metadata, logs, and chunk tracking

Key Engineering Highlights

  • Chunk-based transfers with resume table tracking progress
  • SHA-256 integrity checks for every chunk to prevent corruption
  • Role-based authentication with JWT for access security
  • Collaboration system built using Socket.IO event channels
  • Agile development with Git, task breakdown, and weekly sprints

This project leveraged our combined strengths:

  • Mantasha: UI/UX, visual dashboards, real-time collaboration features
