Inspiration
Weight management is deeply personal but often overwhelming. Whether it's losing or gaining weight, people struggle with staying consistent, knowing what works, and feeling supported. We wanted to create a simple, intelligent assistant that doesn't just track progress, but something that guides you, adapts to your habits, and keeps you motivated. That’s how Shift was born! A mobile app that helps users take control of their weight journey with AI-backed support.
What it does
Shift is a mobile app that helps users manage their weight. Whether they want to lose or gain; with the help of an AI assistant. It offers:
- Daily personalized advice and feedback based on user activity
- A progress tracker that updates based on user logs (e.g., meals, weight, energy levels)
- Motivational nudges and guidance tailored to each user’s goals
- A clean, distraction-free experience that focuses on what really matters: consistency and progress
How we built it
We used Bolt.new for rapid prototyping, enabling us to build the Shift app UI and backend logic quickly. The app was designed and implemented with the following tools:
- Expo + React Native for building the cross-platform mobile experience
- OpenAI’s GPT model for the AI assistant that analyzes logs and provides advice
- Supabase for user authentication and database storage
- Figma for design of some of the app's pages
Challenges we ran into
- Integrating the AI assistant in a way that feels natural and not robotic took a lot of iteration.
- Managing different user goals (gain vs. lose weight) and ensuring the advice stays safe, accurate, and motivational.
- Syncing real-time data updates between local state and Supabase without delays or bugs.
- Making the UI feel calm and motivating; not clinical or judgmental.
- Integrating the conversational AI using ElevenLabs API
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We created a functioning, beautiful mobile app prototype in about a month.
- Our AI assistant adapts to user input and offers context-aware advice in a conversational tone.
- Shift already feels like a product users could trust and use every day and not just a demo.
What we learned
- Bolt.new significantly speeds up idea-to-prototype time, especially for mobile-focused apps.
- AI becomes much more useful when framed as a companion, not a lecturer.
- Designing for both weight gain and weight loss adds complexity, but it’s worth it for inclusivity.
- User flow clarity and emotional design are just as important as functionality when building health-related products.
What's next for Shift
We're planning to:
- Integrate wearable and smart scale support for automated data tracking, possibly by directly integrating Apple Health/Google Fit data
- Add community features so users can find accountability partners
- Launch a premium version with advanced AI coaching and nutrition plans
- Beta test Shift with real users to validate its impact and iterate on feedback
Shift is just getting started — but we’re excited to keep building a tool that helps people move forward, one day at a time.
