Inspiration
I wanted to create a mobile Tower Defense game that gives players more control over the battlefield. Many mobile TD games rely on predefined paths, but I was inspired by games like Fieldrunners and GemCraft and wanted to combine their strongest elements with my own ideas. The result was Shift of Universes: Technomagic, a game where players design enemy routes, experiment with tower combinations, and discover powerful synergies in a dark technomagical world.
What it does
Shift of Universes: Technomagic is a portrait-oriented mobile Tower Defense game. Players reshape enemy paths by building mazes, combine magical and technological towers into hybrid defenses, and create resonance zones through strategic positioning. The game is designed around short sessions while offering enough depth for experimentation and theorycrafting.
How we built it
I built the project by starting from the core gameplay loop and expanding outward. I developed the Game Design Document, Player Journey Map, Visual Concept Package, and Production Plan together to ensure that the mechanics, progression, visuals, and player experience all supported the same vision.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was finding a unique identity for the project. Throughout development, I explored different visual styles and gameplay directions before settling on the technomagical theme and the combination of maze building, tower fusion, and resonance effects.
Another major challenge was the visual side of the project. Since I am not an artist, creating a consistent visual language, selecting an effective color palette, and communicating the game's atmosphere through concept art required a great deal of research and iteration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of creating a cohesive game design where the mechanics, progression systems, and visual identity reinforce each other. I am especially proud that the project evolved beyond a traditional Tower Defense concept and developed its own identity
What we learned
Working on this project taught me the importance of starting from a strong core loop and making sure every additional system supports that experience. I also learned how much visual consistency and clear production planning contribute to communicating a game idea effectively.
What's next for Shift of Universes: Technomagic
The next step is turning the design into a playable prototype and validating the core gameplay loop.
