🛡️ Inspiration

Women across the world still face safety concerns while commuting, traveling alone, working late hours, or navigating unfamiliar places. Existing safety apps often focus only on emergency alerts and fail to provide continuous support before, during, and after an incident.

We wanted to build something more comprehensive—a platform that not only helps during emergencies but actively prevents dangerous situations, provides emotional support, and empowers users with tools that work in real-world scenarios. ShieldHer was born from the vision of combining AI, real-time communication, and community-driven safety into a single platform that women can rely on every day.

🚀 What it does

ShieldHer is a real-time women safety platform that provides instant emergency assistance, live location sharing, intelligent journey monitoring, and AI-powered support.

Key capabilities include:

  • One-tap SOS alerts via SMS and WhatsApp
  • Real-time GPS tracking for trusted contacts
  • Smart Journey Mode with route deviation detection
  • Voice-triggered and shake-triggered emergency activation
  • Realistic fake calls for uncomfortable situations
  • Calculator-based disguise mode
  • AI Safety Companion powered by Claude
  • End-to-end encrypted incident journal
  • Community-driven safety map
  • Offline emergency contacts for 195+ countries

The platform is designed to protect users before, during, and after a safety incident.

🛠️ How we built it

ShieldHer was built using a modern full-stack architecture focused on real-time communication and reliability.

Frontend

  • Next.js 15
  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Tailwind CSS

Backend & Data

  • Supabase Authentication
  • PostgreSQL Database
  • Supabase Realtime

Location & Mapping

  • Mapbox
  • Browser Geolocation APIs

Communication Layer

  • Twilio SMS
  • Twilio WhatsApp Messaging

AI Layer

  • Anthropic Claude API
  • AI-powered safety guidance and assistance

Security

  • End-to-end encrypted incident journal
  • Secure authentication flows
  • Privacy-focused data handling

We combined these technologies to create a seamless safety ecosystem capable of delivering alerts, tracking journeys, monitoring locations, and providing intelligent support in real time.

⚡ Challenges we ran into

Building a real-time safety platform introduced several technical and product challenges:

  • Ensuring reliable location updates without draining device battery.
  • Designing emergency workflows that minimize the number of user actions during stressful situations.
  • Managing real-time synchronization between users and trusted contacts.
  • Balancing privacy with safety when handling sensitive location data.
  • Creating an AI companion that feels supportive without generating unsafe or misleading responses.
  • Implementing multiple emergency trigger methods while reducing accidental activations.
  • Integrating SMS, WhatsApp, mapping, and AI services into a unified experience.

These challenges pushed us to continuously refine both the user experience and system architecture.

🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a complete end-to-end women safety ecosystem rather than a single-feature safety app.
  • Successfully integrated real-time location tracking, emergency alerts, AI assistance, and community reporting.
  • Developed multiple emergency activation methods including voice and shake detection.
  • Created a stealth-focused disguise mode for high-risk situations.
  • Implemented encrypted incident journaling for privacy and evidence preservation.
  • Designed the platform with global accessibility through support for 195+ countries.
  • Delivered a polished user experience within the limited timeframe of a hackathon.

📚 What we learned

Through building ShieldHer, we learned:

  • Safety products require a strong balance between speed, reliability, and privacy.
  • User trust is one of the most important aspects of safety technology.
  • Real-time systems demand careful optimization to maintain performance and battery efficiency.
  • AI can be a powerful support tool when paired with responsible safeguards.
  • The best emergency experiences are often the simplest ones.
  • Community participation can significantly improve collective safety awareness.

Most importantly, we learned that technology can play a meaningful role in helping people feel safer and more confident in their daily lives.

🔮 What's next for ShieldHer - Real-time Women Safety Platform

Our vision extends far beyond the hackathon.

Planned Features

  • Wearable device integration (smartwatches and safety bands)
