Inspiration
It always starts the same way in almost every modern household:
Dinner is warm on the table. A parent gently calls out: "Leo, five more minutes, sweetheart." Five minutes pass. The parent reaches out, taps the power button, and the screen goes black.
What follows isn't misbehavior—it's neurobiology. An abrupt cut to an intense digital experience triggers an immediate, painful dopamine crash. Tears flow, voices rise, doors slam, and an exhausted parent retreats to the kitchen feeling guilty, frustrated, and entirely alone.
When we looked at the parental control market, we felt a deep sense of disappointment. Almost every existing tool was designed like a digital prison: cold lockouts, punitive countdowns, or intrusive surveillance software acting like a parole officer in your home. None of them respected child psychology. None of them asked: Why are kids struggling to transition away from screens?
Children’s developing brains simply lack the executive functioning to navigate steep drop-offs in stimulation without a bridge. We asked ourselves a simple, compassionate question:
What if technology took responsibility for the friction it creates? What if instead of slamming a cold digital door, a friendly companion met the child at the edge of the screen—building a bridge back to the real world through play, hydration, and movement?
That question became Shewall.
What it does
Shewall is an empathetic, pediatric-informed screen companion designed to replace screen-time conflict with connection, positive reinforcement, and mindful transitions.
🦊 1. The Dopamine Bridge (Mindful Breaks)
When a screen limit is reached, Shewall doesn't punish. Instead, our warm mascot Shewy gently pauses the screen and presents an engaging, real-world micro-quest:
- "Cosmic Water Refill: Take 3 refreshing sips of water!"
- "Astronaut Gravity Jumps: Do 5 high jumps to recharge your rockets!"
- "Parent High-Five Delivery: Run over and give mom or dad a giant high-five!"
By keeping the child physically active and mentally engaged, the quest cushions the dopamine drop, transforming screen exits into moments of celebration rather than tears.
🦉 2. Dr. Shewy AI: The Guilt-Free Pedagogical Co-Pilot
Parents don't want surveillance reports; they want to understand their child. Powered by Shewall AI, Dr. Shewy analyzes aggregate digital balance without spying, providing empathetic, actionable conversation starters for the dinner table:
"Leo spent 35 minutes exploring space videos today. Ask him about the rings of Saturn tonight during dinner!"
It gives parents peace of mind and turns screen time into real-world family conversations.
💎 3. The Crystal Vault & Transparent Family Ledger
Rather than punishing failures, Shewall rewards healthy digital balance:
- Children earn Crystals by completing active breaks, emotional check-ins, and bedtime readiness.
- Crystals can be unlocked for calming bedtime stories, custom routines, or earned rewards.
- A transparent, real-time family ledger ensures complete trust between parent and child—no secret deductions, no hidden tricks.
🌙 4. Bedtime Sleep Guardian
When the sun sets, Bilge Baykuş (The Wise Owl) takes over. Screens wind down smoothly with calming voice-guided routines and soothing sleep tales, easing kids into restful sleep naturally.
🛡️ 5. One Family, Frictionless Protection (Powered by RevenueCat)
Zero accounts or passwords required for children. A fast 6-digit pair code links child tablets to the parent's phone in seconds. One single family subscription covers all siblings across all devices, seamlessly unlocked by RevenueCat.
How we built it
We engineered Shewall from the ground up as a native, local-first system that adheres to the strictest Google Play Families and COPPA standards:
[ Android 14+ Jetpack Compose App ]
├── Modern Kotlin Architecture (Clean MVVM, Hilt DI, Coroutines & Flow)
├── ShewallOverlayService (WindowManager + Compose mindful break quests & lockouts)
├── Room Database + DataStore (Encrypted local-first multi-child profiles & offline resilience)
└── RevenueCat Purchases SDK (Dynamic Paywalls & multi-device family entitlements)
│
▼ (Async Heartbeats & Atomic Transactions)
[ Shewall Python FastAPI Backend ]
├── Shewall Pedagogical AI Engine (Constructive, privacy-safe pediatric guidance)
├── Atomic SQL Balance Engine (Concurrent-safe crystal credits across family devices)
├── Device Pairing & Remote Heartbeat Dispatcher (Sub-second sync with battery efficiency)
└── RevenueCat Webhooks (Instant server-side entitlement synchronization)
- Android Native Frontend: Built 100% in Kotlin with Jetpack Compose. We built a custom overlay engine that respects Android lifecycle rules without abusing intrusive accessibility services, delivering silky smooth 60fps animations.
- Python FastAPI Backend: Async high-throughput backend with SQLAlchemy and PostgreSQL. We implemented atomic SQL transactions (
UPDATE balance = balance + :delta) to guarantee mathematical integrity across multi-child family wallets. - Deep RevenueCat Integration:
- Integrated RevenueCat Purchases SDK on mobile and webhook events on the backend.
- Adopted RevenueCat Dynamic Paywalls (
Paywall(options)), streaming real-time subscriber attributes (crystal_balance,is_pro,child_count,daily_limit_minutes) directly into the paywall UI. This allows instant A/B testing of pricing and copy from the RevenueCat dashboard with zero app updates. - Designed fair, transparent family pricing: Annual Shield ($69.99/year with a 7-day free trial) and Monthly Explorer ($9.99/month).
Challenges we ran into
Crafting a Non-Punitive Lock that Still Works:
Children are remarkably clever at circumventing screen limits. Most parental control apps resort to brute-force accessibility hacks that feel aggressive and frequently break on modern Android versions. Designing a respectful, rock-solid Compose overlay that cannot be swiped away in anger—yet feels welcoming rather than punitive—took weeks of iterative UI/UX tuning. The 3-Second Dopamine Window:
When a child is interrupted, you have approximately 3 seconds before frustration sets in. If a break quest felt like a loading screen or a chore, the child revolted. We had to obsess over micro-interactions: tactile bouncy buttons, energetic voice encouragement, and satisfying particle effects so that the child immediately felt a sense of play.Multi-Device State Sync Without Battery Drain:
When a parent grants a 30-minute extension or triggers a bedtime lock from the parent phone, the child's tablet must respond almost immediately. But running persistent socket connections burns battery and triggers aggressive Android Doze killers. We engineered an adaptive heartbeat: 4-second responsive polling while the screen is on, dropping to silent sleep when the screen is dark.Navigating Strict COPPA & Play Families Compliance:
Building for children means zero compromises on privacy: no ad IDs, no analytics trackers, no persistent cloud facial data for break quests. Ensuring every single byte of child data is encrypted, anonymized, and erasable at a parent's tap was demanding, but non-negotiable.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Turning Tantrums into Celebrations:
During our user testing, the moment a 7-year-old put down their tablet, jumped 5 times, and yelled "Mom, Shewy gave me cosmic water crystals!" instead of crying was the proudest moment of this journey. - Zero Mockups, 100% Production Reality:
Every single screen shown in our demo video is running on real Android emulators with live backend synchronization, 480+ passing backend unit tests, zero lint warnings, and an audited release AAB ready for Google Play production. - Seamless RevenueCat Paywall Integration:
Wiring RevenueCat's dynamic native paywall so that parents can see their live crystal balance and child counts reflected in the pricing screen without writing custom UI templates was a huge engineering win. - Completing 14-Day Google Play Closed Testing:
Successfully running a rigorous closed testing track with zero critical crashes and submitting production version 1.6.5 (versionCode 25) with full COPPA declarations.
What we learned
- Children don't resent boundaries; they resent unpredictability:
When limits feel sudden and unfair, kids fight back. But when boundaries are visual, predictable, and offer an energetic stepping stone back to reality, kids embrace self-regulation with astonishing pride. - Empathy outperforms surveillance every single time:
Parents don't want to spy on their children's every tap. They want relief from the daily friction, and they want tools that help them have meaningful, loving conversations at dinner. - RevenueCat unlocks true developer freedom:
Decoupling monetization logic and paywall design from binary releases allowed us to focus 100% of our energy on child psychology and pediatric UX, trusting RevenueCat to handle the immense complexity of cross-platform subscriptions and receipt validation.
What's next for Shewall
- Community Quest Creator: Empowering pediatricians, occupational therapists, and teachers to share custom mindfulness and movement quests for the global Shewall community.
- Whispered Bedtime Stories: Voice-interactive AI bedtime tales where children can whisper choices to help Shewy solve gentle, relaxing evening adventures as they drift off to sleep.
- Wearable Companion (Wear OS): Bringing Dopamine Bridge quests to kids' smartwatches, encouraging physical movement and hydration throughout the day even without a tablet in hand.
- Global Localization: Expanding Shewall’s empathetic methodology to families across Europe, Latin America, and Asia, proving that compassionate screen balance is a universal human desire.
