Project Story – SheUpFinance

Inspiration

SheUpFinance was inspired by a critical gap in financial education among young girls in Peru. Many girls grow up curious about the world, yet by the time they approach adulthood, financial concepts like budgeting, credit, or savings often become sources of fear and confusion. Reports from CAF and INEI show that a significant percentage of women in Peru lack financial autonomy and do not generate their own income.

This reality motivated us to design a project that addresses the problem early in life. We believe that financial education should not begin when someone enters the workforce—it should begin during childhood, when confidence, habits, and decision-making skills are forming.

What We Learned

During the development of this project, we learned that financial inequality is not only about access to money but also about access to knowledge and confidence. Behavioral factors such as fear, lack of exposure, and social expectations play a major role in shaping financial decisions.

We also learned that education must be engaging and accessible. Traditional financial education can feel intimidating, so designing learning experiences that are simple, interactive, and relatable is key to empowering young girls.

How We Built the Project

SheUpFinance was built around the idea of making financial literacy accessible, practical, and inspiring. Our approach focuses on early education through engaging content that introduces core financial concepts such as:

  • Budgeting
  • Saving
  • Responsible use of credit
  • Financial decision-making

The project combines storytelling, educational tools, and accessible learning resources designed specifically for girls. The goal is to build confidence around money and create a positive relationship with financial decision-making from a young age.

Challenges We Faced

One of the biggest challenges was translating complex financial concepts into content that is easy for young audiences to understand. Another challenge was addressing cultural and social barriers that discourage girls from engaging with financial topics.

Additionally, ensuring that the project is relevant for girls in different contexts—including rural communities—required careful consideration of accessibility and inclusivity.

Impact and Vision

SheUpFinance aims to break the cycle of financial exclusion before it begins. When girls understand money, they gain more than financial knowledge—they gain agency, confidence, and the ability to shape their own futures.

Our long-term vision is to expand access to financial education for girls across Peru and Latin America, helping create a generation of financially confident women who can make informed decisions and participate fully in the economy.
