Inspiration
We are 3 women who want to travel this summer so we created sheTravels in order to allow women to use a user friendly guide to assess safety levels in certain areas they wish to travel to. sheTravels gets rid of the need to comb through articles and statistics about the terrible crimes committed against women.
What it does
sheTravels uses data from Statistics Canada and combines data from sexual assault, crimes against children and homicide in order to create a crime per capita rating of a given geographic area. We also have a map and a reporting system in which women can report crimes and danger so that future users can browse the map to see the crimes in a given area. For example, extreme catcalling would not necessarily be reported to the police, however, it should be reported to the community.
How we built it
We built sheTravels with HTML, CSS, Javascript, chart.js and leaflet.
Challenges we ran into
We did not have enough time to properly create a backend to create a functional map.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the idea and execution of sheTravels. We believe that with better resources and more time, sheTravels can be an international guide to help women stay safe everywhere.
What we learned
We learnt that there are many easy ways to create a website.
What's next for sheTravels
In future iterations, we would have an algorithm to filter through multiple databases as well as newspaper articles in order to turn sheTravels into an international database.
