As a team we were trying to figure out what online spaces were available that specifically targeted female student mentorship, and found that what platforms do exist don't provide sufficient incentives for all members of the community to actively participate. We wanted a space where everyone is encouraged to both be the student and the teacher by creating "bite-sized" informational content on whatever tips, tricks, or skills they have.
What it does
SheSays is a video sharing / discussion board platform fusion with a primary focus on the exchange of informational content. Students are encouraged to participate through an incentive system that increases their credibility the more they post and the more well received their content is. The higher a student's credibility, the more likely their content will be featured by the website.
How we built it
The front-end was built using React.js and HTML5. The back-end is running via a Express.js server on a Google Cloud App Engine instance. We tracked user and video information using a mySQL server. The design/prototype was done in Figma.
Challenges we ran into
Covid has made live communication a challenge in it of itself and the inability to be in person to help each other has made direct collaboration difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Getting the design finished
What we learned
We learned MySQL, Figma, React, team communication skills.
What's next for SheSays
We wanted to include a point system for the content creators so other students can see their credentials. For the mentor program we wanted to implement a video call so mentors can host a livestream and directly talk with the users.
