Inspiration
Women’s safety remains a major concern in many parts of the world, especially when traveling alone, commuting late at night, or moving through unfamiliar areas. Despite smartphones and emergency helplines, many people still feel vulnerable because help often comes after something happens rather than preventing danger beforehand.
Our inspiration for SheSAFE AI came from the idea that artificial intelligence could act as a proactive safety companion—helping women identify risks, alert trusted contacts instantly, and provide real-time guidance during unsafe situations.
We wanted to build a solution that transforms a smartphone into a smart safety assistant that is always watching out for you.
What it does
SheSAFE AI is an AI-powered personal safety system designed to assist women during potentially unsafe situations.
Key features include:
AI Threat Detection: Detects distress signals like unusual voice patterns, panic words, or sudden phone movements.
Smart Emergency Alerts: Instantly sends the user's live location and alert messages to trusted contacts.
Safe Route Recommendations: Suggests safer paths using crime data, lighting conditions, and crowd density.
Voice Activation: Users can activate emergency mode with a secret keyword or voice command.
Real-time Monitoring: The app can automatically trigger alerts if abnormal behavior is detected (e.g., sudden running or shaking).
Quick Access SOS: One-tap emergency button that notifies contacts and nearby authorities.
The goal is to provide prevention, fast response, and peace of mind.
How we built it
We built SheSAFE AI using a combination of AI, mobile technologies, and cloud services.
Tech Stack:
Frontend: Flutter / React Native for cross-platform mobile app
Backend: Node.js / Python
AI Models:
Speech recognition for distress keywords
Motion detection using phone sensors
Risk prediction using location data
APIs Used:
Google Maps API for location tracking and routing
Twilio / Firebase for emergency messaging
Real-time database for storing user safety contacts
Machine Learning: Models trained to detect distress signals and risky environments.
The system continuously processes sensor data, voice input, and location information to determine when to trigger safety protocols.
Challenges we ran into
During development, we faced several technical and design challenges:
False alerts: Ensuring the AI accurately detects distress without triggering too many false alarms.
Privacy concerns: Handling sensitive user data like location and voice recordings securely.
Real-time processing: Making sure alerts and detection happen instantly.
Battery optimization: Continuous monitoring can drain battery quickly.
Reliable connectivity: Emergency alerts must work even with weak internet.
We had to carefully balance accuracy, performance, and user privacy.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully built a working prototype of an AI-powered safety assistant.
Implemented real-time SOS alerts with location sharing.
Designed an intuitive and simple user interface for quick emergency use.
Integrated voice-triggered safety activation, making it easier for users to call for help discreetly.
Demonstrated how AI can be used proactively for personal safety.
Our biggest achievement is creating a solution that could potentially save lives and empower women with technology.
What we learned
Working on SheSAFE AI taught us valuable lessons:
AI in safety applications must prioritize reliability and privacy.
User experience is critical in emergency tools—everything must be fast, simple, and accessible.
Combining multiple signals (voice, motion, location) improves threat detection accuracy.
Ethical considerations are important when working with sensitive personal data.
We also learned how to collaborate effectively under hackathon time constraints.
What's next for SheSAFE AI
In the future, we plan to expand SheSAFE AI with more advanced capabilities:
Integration with local law enforcement and emergency services
Wearable device support (smartwatches, safety bands)
AI-powered risk heatmaps for cities
Offline emergency alert system
Community safety network where nearby verified users can assist
Computer vision integration for detecting unsafe environments
Our long-term vision is to turn SheSAFE AI into a global AI-powered safety platform that helps protect women everywhere.
