SheRise — Project Story Where every woman finds her strength. Organization:- Delta Forum Society | Country:- India
The glaring lack of digital resources for women in India drove us to create SheRise. Despite countless government schemes and legal protections existing, women — especially in rural areas — simply could not find or access them digitally.
Let the Digital Empowerment Gap $(\Delta_e)$ be defined as:
$$\Delta_e = R_{available} - R_{accessible}$$
Where:
- $R_{available}$ = Total resources available for women (schemes, programs, legal aid)
- $R_{accessible}$ = Resources actually accessible to women digitally
In India today:
$$R_{available} \gg R_{accessible} \implies \Delta_e \gg 0$$
This gap is what SheRise is built to close.
📚 What We Learned
Years of on-ground work taught us that digital reach $(\rho)$ depends on multiple factors:
$$\rho = \frac{U \times L \times T}{B}$$
Where:
- $U$ = Usability (simplicity of the platform)
- $L$ = Language accessibility (local language support)
- $T$ = Trust (community-driven design)
- $B$ = Barriers (low literacy, low bandwidth, limited devices)
To maximize $\rho$, we must minimize $B$ while maximizing $U$, $L$, and $T$ simultaneously.
Key lessons:
- Simplicity is powerful — usable by women with low digital literacy
- Language is the first barrier — without local language support, even the best platform fails
- Trust matters — women engage more when the platform feels safe
- Real impact comes from listening to the community
🛠️ How We Built It
Our Impact Readiness Score $(IRS)$ guided our preparation:
$$IRS = \sum_{i=1}^{n} w_i \cdot s_i$$
Where $w_i$ is the weight and $s_i$ is the score of each preparation step $i$:
| Step $i$ | Preparation Activity | Weight $w_i$ |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Community surveys with women | 0.30 |
| 2 | Mapping 100+ government schemes | 0.25 |
| 3 | Mobile-first, low-bandwidth design | 0.20 |
| 4 | Multilingual support planning | 0.15 |
| 5 | CMS for easy content updates | 0.10 |
$$IRS = \sum_{i=1}^{5} w_i \cdot s_i, \quad \text{where } \sum_{i=1}^{5} w_i = 1$$
A higher $IRS$ directly correlates with stronger real-world impact for women beneficiaries.
⚡ Challenges Faced
Challenge 1: Skill Development Access Gap
Let $P_{trapped}$ be the proportion of women trapped in economic dependency due to lack of skill access:
$$P_{trapped} = 1 - \frac{W_{skilled}}{W_{total}}$$
Where:
- $W_{skilled}$ = Women with access to skill development programs
- $W_{total}$ = Total women in target communities
In rural India, studies show $W_{skilled} \ll W_{total}$, meaning:
$$P_{trapped} \approx 1 \quad \text{(close to 100\%)}$$
SheRise directly targets reducing $P_{trapped}$ by providing free courses, livelihood resources, and entrepreneurship opportunities in local languages.
Challenge 2: Digital Divide
The Accessibility Index $(A_i)$ for a platform user is:
$$A_i = \frac{C_i \cdot D_i}{B_i^2}$$
Where:
- $C_i$ = Connectivity (internet speed available to user $i$)
- $D_i$ = Device capability (smartphone quality)
- $B_i$ = Bandwidth cost (data price per MB)
For rural Indian women, $C_i$ and $D_i$ are low while $B_i$ is high, making $A_i$ very small. SheRise is optimized for low $A_i$ environments — mobile-first, lightweight, and low-bandwidth friendly.
Challenge 3: Language Barrier
India has 22 official languages. The Language Coverage Rate $(\lambda)$ is:
$$\lambda = \frac{L_{supported}}{L_{total}} \times 100\%$$
Our Phase 1 target:
$$\lambda_{phase1} = \frac{3}{22} \times 100\% \approx 13.6\%$$
Covering Hindi, English, and one regional language — reaching an estimated 250women across 2 Indian states over 3 years.
Challenge 4: Building Digital Trust
Trust $(\tau)$ in a digital platform grows over time and can be modelled as:
$$\tau(t) = \tau_{max} \left(1 - e^{-kt}\right)$$
Where:
- $\tau_{max}$ = Maximum possible trust level
- $k$ = Trust growth rate (driven by community engagement, safety features, moderation)
- $t$ = Time since platform launch
SheRise accelerates $k$ through community moderation, safe reporting tools, and Delta Forum Society's trusted on-ground presence.
📊 Impact Projection
The Cumulative Women Reached $W(t)$ over time follows a growth model:
$$W(t) = \frac{W_{max}}{1 + e^{-r(t - t_0)}}$$
Where:
- $W_{max}$ = Maximum reachable women (target: 250in 3 years)
- $r$ = Growth rate
- $t_0$ = Inflection point (time of peak growth)
| Year | Target Women Reached | States Covered | Languages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | 50 | 2 | 3 |
| Year 2 | 80 | 2 | 4 |
| Year 3 | 120 | 2 | 5 |
