Inspiration
Based on the recent controversy surrounding Robinhood and new historical stock trends, we wanted to make a website that displayed short squeeze stocks and helped users get informed of recent events involving the stock market while also being user-interactive.
What it does
Our website displays popular short squeeze stocks, which users can upvote or downvote based on what stocks they want to short squeeze. Additionally, users can view a full list of stocks with their percent of shares being shorted and total user votes. We also included an "About Us" section that expands on our story and intent behind the project.
How we built it
We primarily used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to construct our front-end. We used Java webscraping to retrieve information from the World Wide Web regarding each of the stocks, everything from their price to their short values, which we then proceeded to put into a MySequel database to act as an intermediary between a front end and back end. As such, our front end is written in HTML, CSS, and Javascript, which is filled with data we previously put into MySequel. We incorporated user interactions in terms of upvoting and downvoting, as well as providing a platform for users to get informed about each of the stocks.
Challenges we ran into
For our first Hackathon, we expected to run into challenges, but ran into roadblocks pretty much every step of the way. As none of us really had extensive experience in web development, we had to do a lot of research on the spot. One particular problem we ran into was pulling data from the SQL database and displaying it onto our front-end. We also originally intended to make a "News" section using Python to extract relevant news articles and their information, but we failed to make it work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
While we didn't have a lot of prior knowledge coming into our first Hackathon, we are very proud that we were able to push out a finished product. We did a lot of learning and experimenting in the 24 hours that we worked on the project, and we'll carry this knowledge with us moving forward.
What we learned
We each learned a lot about various languages and frameworks, as we all worked on parts of the coding. An important thing that we learned about was the process of making a working project from scratch, as we experienced a lot of growing pains in the process. We learned that we can accomplish a lot when we work as a team and put our brains together.
What's next for Sheriff of Nottingham
We have big plans for our website in the future. Some things that we're thinking of expanding on are web scraping and making it even more user-friendly. We also plan to implement a live stock ticker that keeps the user up-to-date, a forum meant for further user interaction, and user accounts for forum and voting purposes.
