Inspiration
Women often feel unsafe while traveling, especially through poorly lit or isolated areas. Shortcuts can be risky and there is often no visibility of nearby help like police stations or hospitals. Most navigation apps focus only on reaching faster, not safer. SheMovesSafe was inspired by the need to help women travel with confidence and peace of mind.
What it does
SheMovesSafe is a smart navigation web app that helps users choose safer routes instead of just faster ones. It shows multiple route options with safety scores, highlights nearby safe places, provides AI based safety advice, and includes an SOS feature for emergencies. Live location sharing adds an extra layer of security.
How we built it
The frontend was built using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with Leaflet for interactive maps and smooth user experience. The backend uses Flask with Python. AI powered guidance is implemented using the Gemini API and Antigravity. The system combines maps with real world safety data and is designed to be open and scalable.
Challenges we ran into
We faced challenges in prioritizing safety while keeping the app easy to use. Identifying meaningful safety indicators and integrating them into navigation was complex. Managing real time performance alongside AI insights and building a simple interface were also key challenges.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
We built a fully working MVP within the hackathon timeline and shifted navigation from speed focused to safety focused. We successfully integrated AI into route selection and deployed a live demo, MVP, and public GitHub repository.
We are proud to have secured 3rd position at the Google Developers Group on Campus PUSSGRC, which validated the impact and real world relevance of SheMovesSafe.
What we learned
We learned that safety is an essential part of daily mobility that is often overlooked. Technology can address real world problems when built with empathy. Clear design and user experience are especially important for safety related applications.
What is next for SheMovesSafe
We plan to enhance safety scoring with more data sources, add community reporting features, improve AI recommendations, and expand to more cities. We also aim to collaborate with local authorities and safety organizations to increase impact.
