Inspiration

Shelter Now is inspired by the resilience of communities affected by natural catastrophes, and its goal is to provide local builders and inhabitants with the knowledge and tools they need to build secure, adaptable homes. Our idea demonstrates a time in which modular, prefabricated shelters produced from locally sourced materials provide quick, sustainable solutions, allowing communities to rebuild and resist future difficulties. Working together, we can construct stronger, more resilient futures rather than just shelters.

What it does

In order to help flood-affected communities in Myanmar construct resilient housing, Shelter Now offers them vital tools and cooperative opportunities. The initiative provides a thorough Resource Library with details on locally-specific, sustainable, flood-resistant housing techniques, facilitating efficient and well-informed reconstruction processes. Shelter Now encourages cooperation between local architects, builders, and people through seminars, design contests, and community activities, resulting in workable, culturally appropriate solutions.

How we built it

Shelter Now was created through a collaborative effort, with a focus on creating a Resource Library of case studies, local building skills, and sustainable construction methods customized to Myanmar's environment and culture. We worked with architects, engineers, and local community leaders to ensure that the tools are useful, practical, and easily available to individuals rebuilding after flooding. The Community Collaboration section was created through partnerships with local groups, which allowed us to offer workshops, events, and design competitions that engaged communities in the development of flood-resistant homes. We worked together to test concepts, receive feedback, and modify our strategy based on real-world demands and local insights.

Challenges we ran into

To build resilience in Myanmar's flood-affected communities, Shelter Now must face a variety of challenges, including fostering trust and open communication with local leaders to ensure community engagement. Actively involving the community through participatory design techniques is essential for creating culturally relevant shelter solutions while addressing resource constraints through partnerships with local vendors and exploring funding options.

Shelter Now is proud to have established a comprehensive Resource Library that provides vital data and case studies on sustainable, flood-resistant housing, empowering local builders and architects. Additionally, the successful completion of pilot modular shelters, constructed from locally sourced materials, has demonstrated the effectiveness of community-driven design and garnered positive feedback from residents.

What we learned

Building trust and cooperation with local communities is crucial for project implementation success, as we discovered while working at Shelter Now. Involving locals in the design process gives them more control over their housing and improves the solutions' cultural relevance. up order to fill up technical knowledge gaps and adjust to shifting environmental conditions, we also acknowledged the significance of flexibility in planning and continuous training for local builders.

What's next for SHELTER NOW

In an effort to provide more local builders with sustainable construction skills, Shelter Now intends to increase the number of community workshops and training sessions. Additionally, it will improve the Resource Library by adding case studies and current data. In order to scale up shelter projects and provide culturally appropriate solutions that successfully meet the requirements of communities affected by flooding, we also hope to deepen our collaborations with regional NGOs and government organizations.
