Inspiration
Child domestic abuse is unfortunately common in today’s world and with the current Covid pandemic, less cases are being reported, yet the issue is still prevalent. With many students learning from home, teachers and others aren’t seeing signs of abuse. Tiktok has been giving this topic exposure with victims coming forward and asking for assistance from their viewers, but many kids seeking help do not know where to go. Seeing this, we decided to step up and create an app that could give them access to a safe place.
What it does
Shelter is an app that shows users safe places to stay near their location. The app features a map with pins at shelter locations, along with links that direct users to child protective service websites. No matter where you are, Shelter can find a safe place for you.
How we built it
We built it via Visual Studio Code, Github, React-native, Node.js, and Expo.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into were getting the geolocations and location permissions, as well as transferring the packets to run the app on our phones through Expo.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned how to ask for help when needed and to keep pushing forward even if the program doesn't work the first few times. We figured out ways to communicate and share with each other online and to have good collaboration.
