Inspiration
I've opened my fridge numerous times to find rotten food like grapes or expired peanut butter and the waste of food pains me. sometimes I don't know what to make with the food I currently have and other times I just Don't know how long the food is gonna last thus I made shelfaware
What it does
It takes in a picture of your grocery receipt runs Ocr and then detects food and suggests recipes for the user to make with the food, it also reminds the user of the shelf-life of the product leading the user to reduce waste
How we built it
Flask backend with numerous apis which were listed in the skills part and pure HTML and CSS
Challenges we ran into
First time doing frontend so I had fun figuring all of that out and the other part that was hard is there was no existing api for shelf life of a product so I had to make my own. another thing was me finding about this hackathon too late leading me to be in a hurry and forget parts like having a SQL database or adding authentication
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Made my first web-scraper for shelf life, first time working with an ocr api and my first time pre and post processing text so it can result in desired results
What's next for ShelfAware
Adding the authentication, adding the SQL data base, giving notifications to users so their food doesn't expire.
