Inspiration

Each of us wants to live a healthier life and sometimes it's really hard to make a decision in favour of a healthier meal. We are either unable to decide what options to go for or usually are unable to keep up with our resolutions.

We decided to create a personal assistant devoted to help you slowly move transition into a healthier eating choices, one ingredient at a time.

What it does

Shelf is an AI nutritionist that introduces smart nutritional habits into your lifestyle.

We have very carefully created our onboarding process in order for the AI to understand more about user preferences.

You have the option to either scan your invoice from your last visit to the supermarket or can be even added/edited manually. The app takes into account your preferences and ingredients you have in your kitchen and recommends the healthiest recipe based on that. The back-end engine assigns a score out of 10 to each and every recipe based on your preferences and the nutritional value of each recipe.

The system also keeps a track of scores of your previous meals and suggests you some ingredients which you can incorporate into your daily routines. The suggestion come at the rate of 1 or 2 per week. The app also tracks if you're considering these items and rewards you with 'Shelf cookies'.

How we built it

For front-end we are using Flutter framework for cross-platform development, DART.

For bak-end we are using Python and JAVASCRIPT.

Challenges we ran into

Monetisation of the app was one of the main problems, but eventually we figured out that if we use some gamification to motivate user by providing 'SHELF cookies'. Which can later be redeemed for partner/ affiliates discount.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We started the idea as 'Breakfast builder' app and transformed into your personal companion. And the main thing of all, all of us are facing this problem and this is the most apt solution till date.

What we learned

In cross-functional teams, where you don't have an assigned manager, you can deviate a little from the path and get lost focusing on the small details. We thrived through discussions, sailed through the night and came across a stronger and better team.

What's next for SHELF

Creating a detailed business plan, test the viability, product-market fit and if everything goes perfect, we would love nothing more than taking it to the appstore near you.
