Inspiration

_A bunch of UWaterloo girls in Engineering who were extremely surprised at the thought that out of the 16 co-ops we have worked at so far as a group, none of the companies were lead by females! _

We felt the urging need to develop a platform - SheLeadz for bringing together information about women leaders of the current generation to inspire young girls. Our website is all-age-groups friendly and has some fun features which invite people to learn about She-Leaders/CEOs and local _S-He_roes.

What it does

SheLeadz is an educational website featuring female leaders-in-tech bios through interactive posts on our webpages. It provides the viewers with the opportunity to learn about not just the global female leaders who have been pioneering this field but also influential women who work at your university or in your community who you have been unaware of. The website connects women that are looking to inspire the young generation with girls who looking to surf the web for some she-stars.

How we built it

The front-end for the website has been implemented using HTML, CSS, Javascript and hosted on Github Pages. Content served on the website is using a Firebase database on the backend to store information for the massive dataset of women-in-tech the website plans to support.

Challenges we ran into

We faced some challenges while trying to set up the our GCP server, and having our custom domain name point to it. We also faced issues in bring able to set up an HTTP/PHP server to run our website. To move forward, we proceeded with GitHub Pages as a solution.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were partially able to complete the website, and we're super proud of it! We attempted adding most of the sections we could to put forward our proof-of-concept. We came up with interesting features in the website that allow you to connect to global leaders as well as local leaders. We added a page for tech talks that you should check out!

What we learned

This was the fun part, the entire project was a challenge for us. From ideation to implementation. None of us were really familiar with front-end development. We registered a domain using domain.com and set up GCP server to host the website. We learnt HTML, CSS and Javascript on the go. Hooking up the Firebase database with the website was also a new learning.

What's next for SheLeadz

Upcoming plans for SheLeadz would be to create/integrate a massive database which would store the content for our website. We also plan to add socials and important links that will help increase connectivity.
