Inspiration

The tragic rape case in Kolkata, where a woman was assaulted in her own workplace, deeply impacted me. It made me realize how unsafe women are in spaces that should inherently be secure. Coupled with the ever-rising instances of gender-based violence across India and the world, I felt the need to create a solution that helps women take control of their safety. This led to the development of SHEELD – A Shield for HER, an AI-powered safety app designed to protect women in real time.

What it does

SHEELD – A Shield for HER is an AI-powered mobile app that provides women with real-time safety information, safer route suggestions, nearby refuge locations, and an easy-to-use emergency alert system. Key features include:

  1. Safety Heatmap: Displays real-time data about safe and unsafe areas based on crime statistics and user-generated reports.
  2. Safe Route Planning: Suggests the safest routes for travel by considering crime data, lighting, and population density.
  3. Nearby Safe Locations: Locates police stations, women’s shelters, and trusted transit points.
  4. Emergency Button: With one click, users can alert the police and all important family members simultaneously with their real-time location.
  5. Female Driver Requests: Allows users to request female drivers from participating transportation services.

How we built it

The app was built using GeoJSON and TopoJSON data formats for precise geospatial mapping in India. I integrated machine learning algorithms to process and display real-time crime data and predict safe zones. The app's backend utilizes real-time data feeds from various sources to dynamically update the safety heatmap and route planning. The emergency alert system was designed to send instant alerts with location tracking to the police and family members. The frontend focuses on simplicity and usability, ensuring that users can act quickly in emergency situations.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Data Accuracy and Availability: Obtaining real-time, accurate crime data, particularly for localized areas, was challenging. We had to rely on multiple sources to ensure the heatmap and safety alerts were current.
  2. User Privacy and Security: Protecting sensitive user data while enabling real-time location tracking was a significant challenge. We had to ensure strong encryption and secure data storage.
  3. UI/UX Design for Emergencies: Designing an interface that is intuitive yet packed with necessary features was challenging, especially for the emergency button, which needed to be easy to access during moments of distress.
  4. Integration of Geospatial Data: The integration of detailed GeoJSON and TopoJSON data with real-time updates required complex spatial algorithms to ensure accurate safety mapping.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Real-time Safety Heatmap: The app’s ability to display real-time data on unsafe areas is a critical feature, offering users actionable insights for immediate decisions.
  2. Emergency Button: The development of a one-click emergency alert feature that sends instant notifications to both police and family members is an accomplishment we are particularly proud of, as it can make a life-saving difference in critical moments.
  3. AI-Powered Route Planning: The integration of machine learning algorithms to suggest safer routes based on dynamic data is a major milestone in combining AI with real-world safety solutions.

What we learned

I learned a lot about integrating AI with real-time geospatial data and how to design an app that is both user-friendly and functionally powerful. The project deepened my understanding of gender-based violence and how technology can play a role in reducing its impact. I also learned the importance of data privacy and security, especially when dealing with sensitive information such as real-time location data.

What's next for SHEELD – A Shield for HER

We plan to expand SHEELD by incorporating more comprehensive data sources and refining its machine learning algorithms to increase the accuracy of predictions. We aim to collaborate with local authorities and transport services to integrate more features such as real-time driver tracking and better access to emergency services. Additionally, we will focus on user feedback to make the app more intuitive and accessible, while continuing to enhance its capabilities to ensure women’s safety and empowerment.
