Inspiration
SheCrops is inspired by the urgent need to address gender disparities in agriculture and promote sustainable development, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5): Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. The platform is dedicated to empowering female farmers in South Africa by providing them with the necessary tools, resources, and knowledge to enhance their productivity and economic opportunities. By focusing on SDG 5, SheCrops aims to create a significant impact on both the agricultural sector and the broader community, fostering gender equality and sustainable growth.
What it does
SheCrops is bringing several transformative changes to the agricultural sector, particularly focused on empowering women farmers in South Africa.
Here are the key changes SheCrops aims to implement:
Enhanced Access to Resources
Access to Land and Financial Services: By securing land rights and improving access to credit and financial services, SheCrops ensures that women farmers can invest in their agricultural activities and expand their operations.
Knowledge and Skill Development
Educational Initiatives: Through quest-based learning, virtual farm simulations, and a library of educational resources, SheCrops equips women with the knowledge and skills needed for sustainable agricultural practices, boosting their productivity and sustainability.
Market and Economic Opportunities
Marketplace and Trading: The online marketplace enables female farmers to buy, sell, and trade agricultural products and resources, improving market access and economic activity. Job Posts and Listings: The job board provides employment opportunities, helping women find work and grow their careers in the agricultural sector.
Community Building and Support
Community Messaging Forum: This forum fosters a supportive community where female farmers can share experiences, advice, and support each other, creating a collaborative network.
Environmental Sustainability
Environmental Impact Metrics: By tracking metrics such as water conservation and biodiversity enhancement, SheCrops promotes climate-resilient agricultural practices that contribute to environmental sustainability.
Improved Information Access
Weather Tracking/Forecasting and Water-Cuts Alerts: Tools for weather tracking and alerts for water cuts help farmers make informed decisions and plan their activities effectively. Agriculture News Posts: Keeping farmers updated with the latest developments in agriculture ensures they stay informed and can adapt to changes in the sector.
Economic Empowerment
Funding and Sponsorship Listings: Information on funding opportunities and sponsorships provides financial support, helping women farmers invest in their agricultural activities and achieve economic empowerment.
Leadership and Capacity Building
Leadership Training Programs: By providing leadership training and capacity-building programs, SheCrops enables women to take on leadership roles in agricultural cooperatives and organizations, fostering a more inclusive and equitable agricultural sector.
Through these initiatives, SheCrops aims to bridge the gender gap in agriculture, enhance the productivity and sustainability of female farmers, and promote inclusive economic growth in South Africa.
How we built it
We are planning on building SheCrops using a combination of modern technologies and cloud services to ensure scalability, accessibility, and efficiency:
Backend Django framework for robust and secure backend development.
Database: PostgreSQL for efficient data storage and management.
Frontend: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for a responsive and interactive user interface.
Cloud Services:
AWS RDS: For secure and scalable data storage.
AWS S3: For storing static files.
AWS Lambda: For a serverless architecture that auto-scales with demand.
API Gateway: For deploying accessible APIs to the community.
Zappa: For deploying serverless web applications from local development to the cloud.
Progressive Web App: Ensures the platform is accessible on mobile devices, providing flexibility and convenience for users.
The development of SheCrops is a collaborative effort between ICT students Lerato Malatji and Motlatso Matabane, and Data Science students Zuzeka Vova and Wookey Seemeen. This collaboration combines diverse expertise to create a comprehensive and innovative solution.
Challenges we ran into
One of the significant challenges is collecting accurate and relevant data. This involves extensive research and collaboration with agricultural experts and local communities to ensure the data's quality and reliability. Additionally, developing a user-friendly interface that caters to the varying levels of digital literacy among female farmers is crucial.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of successfully bringing together a diverse team of ICT and Data Science students, uniting our skills and expertise to conceptualize SheCrops. This collaborative effort enabled us to integrate innovative technologies with agricultural expertise, laying the foundation for a platform aimed at empowering female farmers. Through effective teamwork and shared dedication, we navigated challenges, refined our ideas, and developed a comprehensive plan for SheCrops.
Additionally, we take pride in conducting thorough research and planning phases, which have equipped us with insights into the needs and challenges faced by female farmers in South Africa. This foundational work underscores our commitment to creating a solution that is not only technologically advanced but also deeply rooted in addressing real-world agricultural issues.
Moving forward, we are excited to translate our vision into reality, leveraging our collective strengths to implement SheCrops and make a tangible difference in the lives of female farmers nationwide.
What we learned
Working together on SheCrops, our team understands that cooperation is essential for creating new ideas and making improved decisions, utilizing a range of abilities to enhance project progress. Effective communication and positive feedback aid in solving problems and improving ideas efficiently, as empathy enhances our grasp of the obstacles encountered by women in agriculture, promoting a user-focused strategy.
The collaborative learning between Data Science and ICT students greatly enhanced our understanding of each field's requirements and highlighted the capabilities of our combined team. It improved results by addressing knowledge deficiencies and strengthening comprehension with peer instruction, promoting critical thinking, enhancing social abilities, and increasing motivation through shared goals and responsibility, fostering a dynamic setting where knowledge is created together and all participants gain.

What's next for SheCrops
Moving forward, SheCrops aims to:
Our next steps involve detailed planning and securing funding to implement SheCrops. We will conduct a pilot program in select communities to gather feedback and refine the platform. The pilot will help us identify potential improvements and ensure that SheCrops effectively addresses the needs of female farmers.
Beyond implementation, we aim to scale SheCrops nationally, expanding our reach to empower more female farmers across South Africa. Continuous improvement remains a cornerstone of our approach, where ongoing user feedback and technological advancements will drive enhancements in usability, functionality, and impact. Our vision is to establish SheCrops as a leading platform that not only supports sustainable agricultural practices but also promotes economic empowerment and gender equality in the agricultural sector.
Our vision is to see SheCrops become a pivotal tool in the empowerment of female farmers, driving both environmental sustainability and socio-economic growth. We look forward to the journey ahead and are committed to making a meaningful impact in the agricultural sector.
