Inspiration
One of the biggest financial differences between young women and young men is the disproportionate effect of financial anxiety on young women. College-aged women often undersell their potential when it comes to financial decisions.
Many young women only apply to jobs when they satisfy every requirement, which significantly limits their opportunities during recruitment. Additionally, after they receive an initial offer or begin a job, women are often given a salary below what would be appropriate for their qualifications, which they must negotiate. Finally, women tend to invest later in life and with lower risk tolerance than men do; however, there are benefits to beginning your investment journey earlier and diversifying your investment decisions. Our solution aims to bridge this gap, helping young women overcome financial anxiety and determine the best financial decisions as they begin their careers.
What it does
SHEconomy offers three primary services targeted for young women starting their careers, helping them through the entire process, from acquiring a job to investing money made from the job. The first service is a Resume Fit Grader, where the user will upload their resume and find matches that relate to their best skills, matching roles, and a salary range they should expect. The second service is a Negotiation Simulator that allows users to practice salary negotiation with Jordan, an AI assistant. We offer three escalating difficulty levels, including being able to text Jordan and being able to speak to Jordan voice-to-voice. Finally, our last primary service is an investing simulator. Using this, users can enter their salary, city, and risk tolerance to see how their money compounds over 10 years if they make different investing decisions.
How we built it
We utilized a tech stack of JavaScript, CSS, Python, FastAPI, Gemini 2.0, and PyMuPDF. We utilized Claude Code to assist with development, and Figma to create templates for the UI.
Challenges we ran into
- Determining how financial decision-making looks different for young women versus young men
- Ensuring we have a welcoming and engaging UI.
- Making the graphs and models easier to interpret
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Resume Grader - This feature pulls online job postings that the user is most suited for. You can just click on the links provided, and it will immediately take you to job postings that are applicable to you. We are proud of this feature because it is extremely convenient for users.
- AI Negotiation Practice - This negotiation simulator works end-to-end; it is capable of adapting to a user’s responses and providing them with an evolving conversation, similar to a real-world situation. We are proud of this feature because it simulates real-world conversations very well.
- Investment Simulator - This simulator learns off of the past 5 years of S&P 500 data. We are proud of the real world application of past data.
What we learned
- We learned how to utilize different tools, including Figma, Claude Code, and Gemini, in order to support our development.
- We learned how to integrate a live voice pipeline into our solution.
- Lastly, on the financial side, we learned a lot about financial decision-making and the trends in differences in decision-making between different groups of people (younger vs. older, women vs. men).
What's next for SHEconomy
Creating an account-based system (including a database for these accounts), so that users can access their historical data, while also addressing the security concerns associated with attaching a database to this service
