Inspiration

We wanted to create a project that would have a lasting impact on our community, so we decided to focus on a topic that was important to all of us- environmental sustainability.

What it does

Our code will help you find the best strategies to minimize waste and maximize environmental sustainability. By answering a series of questions, the program will print out different ways for a user to recycle or repurpose the target object. Then, the user will accumulate a certain number of points, depending on which option they chose. Each point translates to 1 cent that we will donate to an organization that promotes environmental sustainability.

How we built it

We used Python for the backend and HTML and CSS for the frontend.

Challenges we ran into

We were not able to finish the website due to time constraints. Another challenge was that we have minimal coding experience, as we are all first-years and have not learned HTML nor CSS. So, developing the website became a harder task. However, we were able to learn a lot more about HTML and CSS through this enriching experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of developing the backend fairly quickly, as we are all well-experienced in Python. We are also proud that were able to develop a home page for the website (screenshot attached below) and that we persevered through the project despite the obstacles we faced, especially in HTML. Also, we successfully collaborated on the code by using VS Code's extension Live Share. This extension allowed us to work on the code together simultaneously from different computers. Considering that this was our first time, we are very proud that were able to do this.

What we learned

We learned more about how to utilize HTML and the different ways we can markup a website via CSS. We also learned how sometimes we may have to vastly change our original plan when we have to import python into HTML files.

What's next for SHE - Sustainable Habits for Earth

We want to learn more about HTML's and CSS's intersection with Python to complete the website and possibly have it published.
