About the Project

Inspiration

In Latin America, millions of women generate income every day through informal work. They sell food from home, clothes through social media, or products in local markets. They sustain families and communities.

However, their economic activity is largely invisible to the financial system.

According to regional labor studies, nearly 46% of workers in Latin America are part of the informal economy, and women represent a significant portion of this workforce. Despite generating income, many women cannot access credit or financial services because they lack formal employment records or banking history.

This creates a major barrier: women who are economically active are still excluded from financial opportunities.

We created SheLedger to change that.

Our inspiration was simple:

What if daily economic activity could become a financial identity?

SheLedger transforms everyday financial behavior into a digital financial history, opening the door to financial inclusion for women who have been invisible to traditional financial systems.

What it does

SheLedger is a platform that helps women in informal economies build a financial history based on their daily economic activity.

Instead of relying on traditional banking records, SheLedger allows users to log simple actions such as:

  • Daily sales
  • Business expenses
  • Savings

From these records, the system analyzes financial behavior patterns and generates a Financial Behavior Score.

This score reflects indicators such as:

  • Income consistency
  • Spending patterns
  • Savings habits

By transforming daily transactions into structured financial data, SheLedger creates an alternative financial identity that can help demonstrate financial stability and potential creditworthiness.

Our MVP includes:

  • A conversational interface to register daily economic activity
  • A backend system that stores financial records
  • A scoring engine that analyzes behavioral financial data
  • A dashboard that visualizes financial insights and financial scores

How we built it

We built SheLedger as a lightweight MVP designed to demonstrate the concept of behavioral financial scoring.

This architecture allowed us to quickly prototype a system capable of converting simple daily inputs into meaningful financial indicators.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was designing a financial scoring system that is both simple and meaningful.

Traditional credit scoring models rely on formal financial data such as bank statements or credit cards. Our challenge was to rethink financial credibility using only behavioral economic signals.

Another challenge was balancing simplicity and usability. The platform must be extremely easy to use for women who may not be familiar with financial technology.

We also had to design a system that demonstrates value even with limited data during the hackathon timeframe.

Finally, we focused on building a solution that could scale across different countries and informal economic contexts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that SheLedger addresses a real and systemic problem affecting millions of women.

During the hackathon, we successfully built a working prototype that:

Converts daily economic activity into structured financial records

Generates a behavioral financial score

Visualizes financial insights in a clear and intuitive dashboard

Most importantly, we created a concept that reimagines financial inclusion by recognizing the economic contributions of women who are often overlooked by traditional financial systems.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned that financial exclusion is often not about lack of economic activity, but about the lack of recognition of that activity.

We also explored how behavioral data can be used to build alternative financial profiles that are more inclusive.

From a technical perspective, we learned how simple financial signals can be structured and analyzed to generate meaningful financial insights.

Most importantly, we realized that inclusive financial systems require both technological innovation and empathy for real-world economic realities.

What's next for SheLedger

Our next steps focus on expanding SheLedger into a scalable financial inclusion platform.

Future improvements include:

Integrating conversational interfaces such as WhatsApp for easier data entry

Developing more advanced behavioral scoring models using machine learning

Partnering with fintech institutions and microfinance organizations

Enabling access to microcredit and financial products based on behavioral scores

Our long-term vision is to create a system where informal economic activity becomes a recognized financial identity, enabling millions of women to access the financial tools they need to grow their businesses and achieve economic independence.
