Title

“The Light We Write: Women, Culture, Transformation”

Logline

A moving cross-cultural film based on Lenise Kenney’s “We Rewrite The Light” showing how women reshape identity, belonging, and opportunity through emerging technologies across continents.

Inspiration

This project was inspired by the core themes in Lenise Kenney’s We Rewrite The Light — agency, voice, collective movement, and the courage to become the speaker instead of the echo. As a Third Culture Kid / Cross-Cultural Kid, those themes mirror my own lived experience of shifting between cultures, rewriting identity continuously, and learning to shape my own light rather than inherit someone else’s version of it.
The song’s collective vision — a rising tide, a shared wonder — and the inclusion and empowerment of the SHE IS AI community motivated me to create visuals that honour global belonging and cultural beauty. This film is where Lenise’s lyrical empowerment through AI across meets my cross-cultural lens.

What I Learned

This project deepened my understanding of how AI can support cross-cultural storytelling when used intentionally. I learned how to blend cultural motifs without flattening them, how to translate lyrical emotion into symbolic visuals, and how to guide AI away from stereotypes through careful iteration. It reinforced that technology can amplify cultural intelligence when rooted in lived global experience.

How I Built the Project

I used a multi-tool AI workflow:

  • Hailuo Minimax for cinematic video sequences
  • Midjourney for cultural visual exploration and concept imagery
  • ChatGPT for narrative structure and thematic interpretation
  • Suno was how the song was made
  • Canva for editing, timing, typography, and final assembly

Each element was created to reflect the emotional beats of the song and the cross-continental nature of my own identity.

Challenges

The main challenge was ensuring cultural respect while working with AI systems that often default to bias or simplification. I had to carefully iterate to avoid misrepresentation.
Balancing outputs from multiple tools also required precision to achieve a cohesive final film. Harmonising tone, colour, movement, and symbolism pushed me to refine every stage of the process.

Accomplishments & Context

This project builds on the success of the original long-form version, which won the She Is AI Video Competition. The version submitted here is a shortened adaptation, created specifically for the Chroma Awards. While it preserves the spirit, themes, and cross-cultural visual perspective of the original film, it has been re-edited and refined to meet the requirements of this competition.

The recognition from the first competition reinforced the strength of the concept and encouraged me to develop this new version. This submission reflects that growth — a distilled evolution of the original piece, redesigned for a broader, global audience.
