Inspiration
SharpDM started with a simple observation: creators and businesses spend hours responding to Instagram comments and direct messages manually. Important conversations can get missed, potential customers may lose interest while waiting for a reply, and repetitive tasks take time away from creating content and growing a business.
As a founder and developer, I wanted to build a solution that goes beyond basic auto-replies. My goal was to make Instagram automation more flexible, accessible, and useful for real business needs.
What it does
SharpDM is an Instagram automation platform that helps creators, businesses, and marketing agencies automate conversations and turn engagement into business opportunities.
Its features include comment-to-DM automation, Story and Live interaction automation, multiple Reel automations, AI-powered responses, multilingual replies, and a visual DM flow builder.
Users can also create custom conversation workflows, collect and qualify leads, share carousel messages, moderate qualifying spam and abusive comments, manage multiple Instagram accounts, and guide users toward appointment bookings or relevant links through Link in Bio.
SharpDM connects through Meta's official APIs and authentication flow, so users don't need to share their Instagram passwords with us.
How I built it
I built SharpDM as a SaaS product using React for the frontend and Node.js for the backend. React powers the interactive dashboard and visual workflow-building experience, while Node.js handles backend operations, API integrations, and automation processing.
A significant part of the development involved integrating with Meta's APIs to support Instagram automation within the platform's available permissions and messaging limitations.
I approached the product with a modular mindset, focusing on making different automation capabilities work together in one platform rather than forcing users to rely on separate tools for every task.
Challenges I ran into
One of the biggest challenges was building automation that works within Meta's API capabilities, permissions, and messaging limitations. Instagram automation isn't simply about sending messages; workflows must respond to supported events and process interactions appropriately.
Another challenge was designing a visual flow builder that gives users flexibility without making automation complicated. Combining conditional logic, delays, input collection, AI-powered responses, and lead capture into a usable experience required careful planning.
Building and launching a SaaS product also means balancing feature development, usability, reliability, and the practical limitations of a small team.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud to have taken SharpDM from an idea to a live product. As both founder and developer, I've worked on turning the vision into a functioning platform with multiple automation capabilities under one roof.
I'm especially proud of the visual DM flow builder and the combination of Instagram automation, AI-powered responses, lead capture, and appointment booking. These features reflect the larger goal behind SharpDM: helping users do more with the attention and engagement they've already earned.
We're at the beginning of our journey, and I'm excited to put the product in the hands of real users and learn from their experiences.
What I learned
Building SharpDM taught me that developing a product is only one part of building a business. Understanding user problems, designing a straightforward experience, working within third-party platform constraints, and prioritizing the right features are equally important.
I also learned that automation should do more than reduce manual work. It should help people create better customer experiences while giving them control over how their conversations work.
Most importantly, launching an imperfect but functional product creates opportunities to learn that are difficult to get from development alone.
What's next for SharpDM
SharpDM has recently launched, and our immediate focus is on attracting early users, collecting honest feedback, improving the existing experience, and making the platform more reliable and intuitive.
We're looking to strengthen our automation workflows, improve AI-powered conversations, and continue refining lead capture and appointment booking.
Our long-term vision is to make SharpDM a practical Instagram automation platform for creators, businesses, and agencies of different sizes. We're building step by step, with a focus on solving real problems rather than adding features just for the sake of it.
