Inspiration

We were inspired to create Sharity as charities play a big role in supporting people in need and communities during hard times such as the recent Jasper wildfires. One of our team members works with non-profits and shared how charities mainly act independently and many have excess resources. This inspired us to create a community platform where charities can view each other's resources so they can work together to maximize the impact of their resources for various communities and causes. We also wanted to help streamline the donation process from tax credits to tracking donations. With all of this information in one place, hopefully more people and companies feel encouraged to donate.

What it does

Sharity connects charities and individuals, making it easier for people to donate and for charities to use resources effectively. On the user's profile page, you can track your donations and receipts. Charities can update if they need more donations for different items on their profile page. This information is displayed on a map where users can view charity information and what donations they need. When the user makes a donation, it is added to the user's profile page.

How we built it

React, Node.js, Next.js, DaisyUI, Tailwind CSS, and Auth0 for user login. As well, we used the Google Maps API for the charity map and Adobe Creative Express for creating an add-on.

Challenges we ran into

We had trouble integrating Auth0 and MongoDB, and displaying the Google Maps API.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of creating a socially impactful platform! Hopefully Sharity will encourage more donations and amplify charities' impact. We're also proud of working through the technical difficulties we faced and successfully implementing new things that we learned.

What we learned

We learned lots of new languages, frameworks and tools such as DaisyUI.

What's next for Sharity

  • Expanding the charity map to include data from charities in different regions
  • Using blockchain to maintain transparency and security where all donations are traceable and can be verified
