Inspiration
We noticed a simple problem in everyday communities: people often need items that someone nearby already owns but rarely uses. Students may need books, electronics, tools, sports equipment, or other items for a short period, while those items remain unused most of the time.
We wanted to make this process easier and smarter. This inspired us to build ShareLoop, a platform that automates community sharing and helps people find, lend, rent, sell, and donate items instead of unnecessarily buying new ones.
What it does
ShareLoop is a smart community-sharing platform designed for colleges, hostels, apartments, and local communities.
Users can:
🔍 Discover useful items available nearby 🤖 Get smart item recommendations 📦 List items for lend, rent, sell, or donate 📍 Find items based on location 📱 Use QR codes for easier and safer handovers 💳 Make digital payments for applicable transactions 👥 Connect with people within their community
The goal is to automate as much of the sharing process as possible while making it simple for users.
How we built it
We built ShareLoop using a modern web technology stack.
Frontend: React.js, TypeScript, and Vite Backend & Database: Supabase and PostgreSQL Authentication: Supabase Authentication Storage: Supabase Cloud Storage AI: Recommendation system for personalized item discovery Maps: Google Maps integration for location-based discovery Verification: QR-based verification Payments: UPI integration Deployment: Vercel Version Control: GitHub
We focused on creating a clean and simple user experience where a user can go from finding an item → requesting it → completing the transaction → verifying the handover with minimal friction.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was connecting multiple features into one smooth workflow. Authentication, item listings, recommendations, location services, QR verification, and transactions all needed to work together reliably.
We also had to think about trust and safety when sharing items between users. Designing a simple verification process and making the sharing workflow easy to understand required several iterations.
Another challenge was balancing functionality with a clean interface so that users wouldn't feel overwhelmed by the number of features.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of turning a simple idea of "sharing unused items" into a functional platform with multiple integrated features.
Our key accomplishments include:
🤖 Integrating smart recommendations 📍 Implementing location-based item discovery 🔄 Supporting lending, renting, selling, and donating 📱 Adding QR-based verification 💳 Integrating digital payment functionality 🔐 Implementing user authentication 🗄️ Building a cloud-backed database and storage system 🎨 Creating a simple, user-friendly interface
Most importantly, we built ShareLoop around a real-world problem and focused on making the entire process smarter and more automated.
What we learned
Building ShareLoop taught us that developing a real-world application is much more than writing code. We learned how different technologies need to work together to create one reliable product.
We gained practical experience in:
Full-stack web development React and TypeScript Database design and backend integration API integration AI-powered recommendations Authentication and authorization QR-based workflows Payment integration Deployment and debugging Designing products around real user problems
We also learned the importance of starting with the user problem and then choosing the technology, rather than building features simply because they are technically interesting.
What's next for ShareLoop - Smart Community Sharing
Our next goal is to make ShareLoop smarter and more scalable.
We plan to add:
🧠 More personalized AI recommendations 🔔 Smart notifications for requests and availability ⭐ User ratings and reputation scores 🛡️ Improved trust and verification mechanisms 📊 Smart analytics for communities 🏫 Dedicated community spaces for colleges and hostels 📍 Better location-based matching 🤖 More automation across the lending and rental lifecycle
In the long term, we envision ShareLoop becoming a smart resource-sharing network where communities can access what they need without everyone having to own everything.
