Inspiration
We noticed that many useful items such as books, tools, electronics, sports equipment, and household products are often used only a few times and then left unused. At the same time, someone nearby may need the exact same item and end up buying a new one. This creates unnecessary spending, resource consumption, and waste.
We wanted to create a simple solution where sharing becomes easier than buying. This inspired ShareLoop — a platform that helps communities make better use of the resources they already have.
What it does
ShareLoop connects people within trusted communities so they can borrow, lend, rent, sell, or donate items instead of unnecessarily buying new ones.
Users can discover items, search and filter listings, select real locations using Google Maps, send borrowing requests, manage listings, save items to a wishlist, and build trust through profiles, ratings, and reviews.
By extending the life and usage of existing products, ShareLoop helps people save money, reduce waste, conserve resources, and make everyday consumption more sustainable.
How we built it
We built ShareLoop as a modern full-stack web application using React, TypeScript, TanStack Start, Vite, Tailwind CSS, and shadcn/ui.
The backend uses Supabase and PostgreSQL for authentication, database management, storage, and security through Row Level Security. Google Maps Platform is integrated for location selection and discovery, while an AI layer supports listing creation and item discovery.
The application is designed around a server-based architecture using TanStack Server Functions, Nitro, and Cloudflare Workers, with GitHub used for version control and collaboration.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was connecting different parts of the platform into one reliable user experience. Authentication, user profiles, item listings, borrowing requests, booking states, reviews, image storage, location services, and database permissions all had to work together correctly.
We also had to ensure that users could only access the information and actions they were authorized to use. Designing secure database rules and handling different states of a borrowing request required careful planning and testing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of turning a simple idea about sharing unused items into a working community platform with a complete core borrowing and lending workflow.
We successfully implemented authentication, item listing and management, rent/sell/donate options, borrowing requests, Google Maps location selection, image storage, wishlists, ratings and reviews, sustainability tracking, and AI-assisted features.
Most importantly, we built ShareLoop around a clear purpose: making reuse practical and accessible instead of simply encouraging people to consume less.
What we learned
We learned that building a useful product is not just about adding features. Every feature needs to solve a real user problem and work reliably with the rest of the system.
We gained practical experience in full-stack development, database design, authentication, API integrations, location services, security, responsive UI design, and building a product around sustainability.
We also learned how important it is to balance innovation, usability, security, and simplicity when building a real-world solution.
What's next for ShareLoop — Share More. Waste Less.
Our next goal is to make ShareLoop even more useful for real communities by adding real-time chat, notifications, QR-based pickup and return verification, online payments, nearby-item discovery, stronger trust and verification, and an admin system.
We also plan to improve our AI-powered recommendations and expand ShareLoop across colleges, apartments, hostels, and local communities.
Our long-term vision is simple:
Make sharing the easier choice than buying, extend the life of products, and help communities build a healthier Earth together.
🌱 Share More. Waste Less.
