According to Microsoft, 162.8 M Americans do not have access to high-speed internet. You may not have high-speed internet but your neighbor may have one. We are in a once in a lifetime crisis. High-speed internet in the US is simply not cheap and will all the people losing jobs, every extra dollar is a concern for these. At the same time, in this day and age, anyone with a better internet has a higher chance of success than someone who doesn't have it.
ShareFi takes the geolocation of a user and simply works as a repository of nearby WiFi information. On one side, people can add their WiFi and when someone near them sees the added WiFi, they can plug in the WiFi name and pass to use the internet. People can also chat with their using our real-time messaging system.
We built it on Ruby on Rails and used Google for location system.
We are facing the classic chicken and egg problem. We need people to add enough WiFi so that others can find and use them. We also found out as people are mostly at home, some are reluctant to share as they think they need the internet they already have!
