Inspiration

As a remote developer bouncing between Berlin and London, I struggled to find reliable, easy-to-navigate tools to find coworking spaces that fit my needs—no bloated apps, just clear filters and real availability. I wanted to build something for fellow nomads, freelancers, and small teams who needed simplicity and speed to find their perfect work spot.

What it does

Shared Workspace Finder is a one-stop platform to discover and book coworking spaces across 6 major Western cities. Users filter by location, price range, facilities (Wi-Fi, parking, 24/7 access), and vibe (quiet, creative, casual), then view detailed space pages with photos, availability timelines, reviews, and flexible booking options (hourly/daily/monthly).

How we built it

I started with wireframing in Figma to map the user flow—prioritizing the search/filter experience and space detail pages. I built the frontend with React and Tailwind CSS for responsive design, used Node.js for backend logic, and Firebase to store space/review data. I integrated date-fns to power the availability calendar and React Router for seamless page navigation.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was building real-time filter logic with AND conditions—ensuring all filters applied simultaneously without page reloads, and handling empty result states gracefully. I also struggled to balance visual appeal (per the brand color palette) with performance, as the space list needed to load quickly with dynamic status updates.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a smooth, intuitive filter system that updates results instantly; designing a color-coded availability system (green/yellow/red) that makes status at-a-glance; and building a fully functional booking summary panel that adapts pricing to rental mode—all without requiring login or payment processing bloat.

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of React state management for dynamic UIs, learned to prioritize user experience over feature bloat, and mastered integrating third-party APIs (like date-fns) to solve complex calendar logic. Most importantly, I learned how to translate user pain points (my own and others’) into actionable, simple features.

What's next for this project

I plan to expand to more European and US cities, add a saved spaces feature for repeat users, integrate with local coworking space providers for live availability data, and launch a mobile-optimized version. I also want to add multilingual support (starting with Spanish and German) to serve more remote workers across regions.
