Inspiration

In 2023 I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (stomach ulcers). The doctor told me that I would be on medication for the rest of my life, and when one medication stopped working, I would be put on a stronger one. I asked about changing diet or alternatives, but was told medication was my only option.

The medication the doctor offered helped a lot, but I knew I wanted to heal rather than go on stronger medication. I started my journey of careful diet monitoring and help from a health specialist.

WellChum is the app I wish I had at the start of my journey. It's incredibly confusing working out which foods and supplements are helping or not! Not only that, but the health specialist had a lot of instructions from breathing techniques to supplements that needed to be taken at specific times in the day.

Being able to share my health data with the specialist directly rather than summarising it will help going forward.

My dream is for WellChum to help me over the finishing line and then go on to help many other people!

What it does

WellChum makes it easy for you to understand your health progress. You can record diet, medication and symptoms. The app automatically compiles data into analytical graphs helping you to see patterns and make decisions. You can easily share data with your health practitioner and allow them to update prescriptions and medications.

How we built it

It was primarily built using Bolt.new with minor help from ChatGPT and Google Gemini. The process was iterative, asking Bolt to create a part of the app, testing it, looking at the design, and then asking Bolt to update it or create a new section.

Challenges we ran into

A major challenge that almost curtailed the project was integrating Supabase. Once Supabase was integrated, the app would not load! There was an issue with Expo and Supabase. I reverted the app and tried quite a few techniques before going on Bolt's Discord. An amazing mentor called Joel did a screenshare with me and helped to solve it the issue. He created a metro.config that solved the issue.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating this app in just 30 days! I can't believe I have something I can use to help me and hopefully others.

What we learned

Anything is possible with Bolt. Have a dream for an app? A prototype can be built within an hour to see if it's viable. It will take days/weeks to get the design and functionality just right, but even that time frame is mind blowing, Bolt is a dream tool.

What's next for WellChum

The next will be creating health professional accounts that can manage their clients' accounts. It will make it straightforward for the health professional to get an overview of their client's diet, medication and symptoms. As well as set alerts if a symptom occurs over a certain intensity.

The journal will have an AI integration to help and support the user.
