Inspiration
As a home cook who loves connecting with fellow food enthusiasts, I wanted to create a space where passion for cooking isn’t just about recipes – it’s about community. I noticed many cooks struggle to find real-time collaboration and local ingredient resources, so Cooking Club was born to fill that gap.
What it does
Cooking Club is a social platform for home cooking lovers to explore weekly themed recipe challenges, join live group cooking sessions, discover and rate user recipes, connect with local ingredient sourcing groups, and learn cooking tips from the community.
How we built it
I started with mapping core user journeys (browsing challenges, joining live sessions) then designed the UI with a warm, minimalist aesthetic using Figma. I built the frontend with React and Bootstrap for responsiveness, used JSON for content structure, and Firebase for lightweight data management.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing visual simplicity with functional depth was tough – ensuring the platform felt intuitive but still had all key features (like rating filters and location-based group sorting). Also, designing the live session simulation to feel immersive without complex video tech required creative UI work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a seamless navigation flow between the dashboard and core pages, and crafting a color palette (terracotta, sage green, oak) that feels warm and inviting – true to the spirit of home cooking. The recipe challenge leaderboard and ingredient group features also turned out exactly as I envisioned for community engagement.
What we learned
I deepened my understanding of user-centered design – prioritizing what home cooks actually need over flashy features. I also learned how to optimize frontend performance for smooth transitions, and how to curate content that feels authentic to Western culinary traditions.
What's next for this project
I plan to expand the cooking tip categories to include regional Western cuisines (Mediterranean, Tex-Mex, French bistro), add more interactive elements to live sessions (like step-by-step recipe sync), and enhance the ingredient group feature to include seasonal sourcing guides for European and American regions.
