Inspiration
I grew up watching my parents and grandparents plant the same crops year after year, but the results kept changing. Some seasons were good, others disappointing-even though they used the same methods. This showed me how unpredictable farming has become due to climate change, soil degradation, and lack of timely information. It inspired me to build Shamba Smart: a platform to make farming more predictable, data-driven, and resilient.
What it does
Shamba Smart empowers smallholder farmers with Al-driven insights on weather, soil health, crop choice, and market prices. It helps farmers: Predict weather patterns for better planning. Get recommendations on soil treatment and crop selection. Detect early signs of pests and diseases. Access fairer markets with price transparency. By combining these tools, farmers can grow more, lose less, and earn better.
How we built it
Developed a web and mobile platform accessible even in rural areas. Integrated Al models for weather forecasts, soil recommendations, and pest alerts. Built a market insights module to connect farmers directly with price data. Designed with offline-first features, so farmers can still use the app with limited connectivity.
Challenges we ran into
Accessing reliable agricultural datasets for training Al models. Making the platform simple and intuitive for farmers with little digital experience. Ensuring usability in areas with poor connectivity and low smartphone penetration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a prototype that blends Al with real farming needs. Designing a system that is farmer-first, not tech-first-simple enough for rural communities. Showing how technology can directly tackle food security.
What we learned
Farmers don't just need tools-they need trustworthy, actionable insights. Accessibility and simplicity are as important as advanced technology. Tech + Agriculture can be a powerful force for solving climate and food insecurity challenges.
What's next for Shamba Smart
Partnering with agricultural research institutions to improve data accuracy and expand crop recommendations. Piloting the solution with local farmer cooperatives to test usability in real-world conditions. Expanding into SMS and USSD support so farmers without smartphones can still access insights. Exploring loT sensors for soil and water monitoring to provide even more accurate recommendations.
