Shamba App: Irrigation Management System
Inspiration
farmers face significant challenges in managing water usage efficiently on our farms. Water wastage due to inefficient irrigation techniques is a common problem that impacts crop yields and resource conservation. Our inspiration for Shamba App came from the need to provide a solution that allows farmers to monitor and control water usage directly from their mobile phones.
What it does
Shamba App is an irrigation management system that enables real-time monitoring and control of water usage on farms. Using both hardware and software components, the system collects data on water usage, sends it to a cloud database, and allows farmers to manage their irrigation systems through a mobile application.
How we built it
We built Shamba App using a combination of hardware and software components:
Hardware Components:
- Arduino Mega
- GSM Module (SIM800)
- Flow-Rate Meters (2)
- Ball Valves (2)
- Battery (3.7V)
- Push Buttons (4)
- Relay (2)
- Display (HT1621)
Software Components:
- Shamba App (mobile application)
- Arduino IDE for programming the microcontroller
- Android Studio for platform development -Firebase fore database storage
The system collects real-time data on water usage and sends it to Firebase. The mobile application then allows farmers to monitor and control their irrigation systems based on this data.
Challenges we ran into
- Security: Ensuring the system is protected against cyber threats.
- Environmental Factors: Maintaining accuracy in extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Developed a fully functional hardware setup.
- Created a mobile application for real-time water monitoring.
- Implemented an efficient water management platform that promotes sustainable irrigation practices.
What we learned
We learned the importance of integrating hardware and software to solve real-world problems. The project also highlighted the significance of user-friendly design and the need for educating end-users (farmers) on new technologies.
What's next for Shamba App
Our next steps for Shamba App include:
- Enhancing the security features to better protect against cyber threats.
- Expanding training programs to ensure more farmers can use the system effectively.
- Improving the system's accuracy and reliability in various environmental conditions.
- Exploring additional features, such as predictive analytics for better irrigation scheduling and resource management. -adding suitable databases for storing collected values -employing models that can help conserve water by regulating flow -implement a system for recharging the battery,i.e solar
