Inspiration

The inspiration for Shaken & Stirred came from my passion for mixology and the joy of crafting the perfect cocktail. I wanted to create an app that not only provides a vast collection of cocktail recipes but also elevates the user's experience by offering a seamless and beautifully animated interface. The idea was to bring the expertise of a professional bartender to the palm of your hand, making it easy for anyone to create stunning cocktails at home.

What it does

Shaken & Stirred is a comprehensive cocktail recipe app that allows users to explore, discover, and craft a wide variety of cocktails. The app offers features such as:

  • Recipe Discovery : Access a vast library of cocktail recipes categorized by ingredients, type of glass, and popularity.
  • Favorites & Custom Collections : Users can save their favorite cocktails and create personalized collections for different occasions.
  • Cocktail of the Day : Get daily inspiration with a featured cocktail, making it easy to try something new.
  • Seamless User Experience: The app is designed with smooth animations and a modern interface, making it both visually appealing and easy to navigate.
  • Offline Access : Users can save recipes locally for offline access, ensuring they can always mix a drink even without an internet connection.
  • Monetization: Premium users can unlock exclusive recipes, ad-free experiences, and advanced features through in-app purchases.

How we built it

Shaken & Stirred was built using the following technologies:

  • Kotlin & Jetpack Compose : For building the Android app, ensuring a modern, responsive, and maintainable UI.
  • TheCocktailDB API: Integrated to fetch a wide variety of cocktail recipes, including ingredients, categories, and glass types.
  • Room Database: Utilized for local storage, allowing users to save favorites, recent cocktails, and offline data.
  • RevenueCat SDK: Integrated for managing in-app purchases, enabling a monetization strategy that includes premium content and features.
  • Animations : Custom animations were created to enhance the user interface, making the app more engaging and enjoyable to use.

Challenges we ran into

Building Shaken & Stirred presented several challenges:

  • UI/UX Design: Balancing an aesthetically pleasing design with intuitive functionality was challenging. It required multiple iterations to achieve the right balance.
  • API Rate Limits: Handling API rate limits while providing a seamless user experience, especially when dealing with large datasets, required careful optimization and caching strategies.
  • Local Storage: Ensuring efficient synchronization between local storage and real-time API data, particularly for offline access, was a complex task.
  • Monetization Balance: Finding the right balance between offering valuable premium features and maintaining a strong free offering to attract users was a nuanced challenge.

  • Efficient API Handling: Gained valuable insights into handling API data efficiently, including caching, managing rate limits, and optimizing data retrieval.
  • Monetization Strategies: Learned how to integrate RevenueCat for managing in-app purchases effectively, striking a balance between free and premium features.
  • User-Centric Design: Understood the importance of user feedback in refining UI/UX, leading to a more polished and user-friendly app.
