Inspiration

The film, an original idea of our team, draws its creative inspiration from classic film noir masterpieces like "Chinatown" and "L.A. Confidential," blending their atmospheric tension with the procedural intensity of modern detective thrillers. We were inspired by narratives exploring intergenerational trauma and the weight of past sins - how crimes covered up decades ago continue to ripple through time, destroying lives and families.

What it does

Seattle detective Alex Cramer investigates a series of ritualistic murders marked by mysterious symbols and cryptic messages. As the body count rises, Alex discovers a connection to a dark secret from 1987 involving her father, former detective Frank Cramer. Racing against time and questioning everyone around her, Alex must uncover the truth before more lives are lost. In the rain-soaked streets of Seattle, the past refuses to stay buried, and justice comes at a devastating price.

How we built it

The screenplay was crafted using SAGA Screenwriting application by Cyberfilm AI Corporation and Claude A.I. For video creation we used primarily Google Flow, Google VEO3.1 & VEO3, OpenAI Sora 2, and KLING AI. For image creation we utilized Google Whisk, Gemini, Imagen & Nano Banana, Freepik, Runway and KLING AI. The original soundtrack was composed and produced using SUNO. We used VEED as video editor and Artlist for sound effects.

Challenges we ran into

Our primary challenge was to achieve a cohesive film noir atmosphere. Additionally, creating the intricate detective narrative demanded extensive iteration to ensure character continuity and emotional authenticity throughout the 70 minute runtime. The rain-soaked Seattle setting, central to the noir aesthetic, proved particularly demanding - balancing atmospheric rainfall in every scene while keeping faces recognizable and action clear required hundreds of generation attempts and meticulous shot selection.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

"Shadows in the Rain" marks our fourth feature film in just 17 months, the second in the past four months, demonstrating our effort to experiment with different genres and AI filmmaking workflows. We hope that the film captures successfully a film noir atmosphere, from the rain-soaked cinematography to the morally complex characters and twist-laden plot. We also hope that we have created a cohesive, engaging 70 minute thriller that stands on its own merits as compelling storytelling, not just as a technological showcase.

What we learned

As always, this production taught us that AI filmmaking is still very much a learning process, even after two years in the field. Each project reveals new challenges we hadn't anticipated and forces us to adapt our approach in real time.

What's next for Shadows in the Rain

Among our future plans is to experiment with hybrid productions, combining actual human actors, especially for demanding, dynamic motion scenes with AI characters, to achieve a more realistic result.
