Inspiration
Our inspiration came from the desire to enhance the Shades app experience for Gen-Z users, making it more engaging and interactive.
What it does
Our revamped version of the Shades app now offers a range of exciting features to boost user engagement. Users can participate in daily quizzes to earn streaks, engage in debates on articles, and share their world through a photo journalism feature.
How we built it
We utilized Figma to design and prototype the new features of the Shades app, enabling us to craft a seamless user experience that harmoniously integrates with the existing styles and color schemes.
Challenges we ran into
While brainstorming new ideas for the Shades app, merging our concepts into a cohesive feature proved to be challenging. However, through in-depth discussions, we were able to distill our ideas into a few concrete concepts and features. The process of narrowing down ideas for prototyping was also challenging, especially without mentorship. Yet, after thorough discussions, we settled on a central theme of Engagement features. We faced the additional challenge of an incomplete team. We initially started strong with a team of 5 members, however we gradually dwindled down to just two of us crafting the working prototype on Figma. Though it was demotivating to lose more than half of our team members, we are incredibly proud of the finished product.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of our ideas, as we really pushed ourselves to think outside the box and come up with new ideas that haven't already been implemented. We are also proud of the finished prototype which explains our vision.
What we learned
One of our teammates is a beginner in Figma for prototyping, which made it challenging to finish implementing our ideas given the time constraint. Despite this, it was a great learning experience and we both learned a lot from one another despite working together for the first time. We also learned how to effectively and efficiently manage our time, as we had a very strict time limit to finish building our prototype.
What's next for Shades Engagement Features
Some new features we thought could be interesting - Photo Journalism and Community Posts - Users can submit their own news stories including a title, image, and a news link. AI will help flesh out the posts to make them complete and engaging. Debate Feature - This feature will allow users to engage in debates on various topics, such as international conflicts or social issues. People can choose to join sides with those who share their opinions or oppose them. Debates can be anonymous and will be monitored by AI to keep discussions respectful. Video Content-Users can view TikTok videos and detailed Instagram posts within the app, offering richer, visual content on various topics directly from influencers and creators. Local News Customization - Users can choose to see news from a specific location. This feature will provide local news and event information tailored to the user's interests or current location. User Interface Personalization - The app will adapt its content based on the user's mood, which they can select daily. This mood-based profile adjustment suggests content that fits how the user feels each day. Interactive Daily Quizzes-Users can take daily quizzes about current events and trending news. These quizzes will be fun, with features like scoring points, maintaining streaks, and competing with friends. Accessibility Features - The app will include options for screen readers and audio content to help visually impaired users enjoy the content just like everyone else. Choose your own adventure - The app will ask users questions at the end of each news piece to decide what they should read next based on their choices. Better Sharing Options- Right now the app just shows links when pressed share, there could be an UI that can be created, for example how it shows on apple music or for spotify when we share a song.
