Inspiration

I was inspired by the raw, kinetic energy of classic anime and the gritty, stylized visuals of graphic novels like "Blade Runner" and "Akira." I wanted to capture the feeling of a vibrant, moving comic book, blending different genres—from racing and martial arts to cyberpunk and fantasy—into a single, cohesive, high-energy experience.

What it does

Shabush is a visually-driven music video that creates a series of fast-paced, surreal vignettes. It transports the viewer through various animated worlds, each with its own unique aesthetic and narrative, all synchronized to a dynamic song. It’s an immersive, artistic piece that tells a story through mood and motion rather than a linear plot.

How I built it

I used a combination of rotoscoping and AI-powered animation tools. First, I filmed live-action footage as a base. Then, I ran this footage through AI models that applied a consistent, hand-drawn comic book aesthetic. This process allowed me to achieve the stylized look while maintaining the fluid, realistic motion of the original footage. I then layered in additional digital effects and illustrations to enhance the final look.

Challenges I ran into

The main challenge was maintaining visual consistency across the different scenes and genres. The AI models sometimes produced inconsistent results, requiring extensive manual cleanup and editing frame by frame. Syncing the diverse visuals—from a Formula 1 car to a fire-breathing dragon—with the musical beats was also a complex task that required precise timing and numerous iterations.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am incredibly proud of the final, polished aesthetic. Achieving the seamless blend of live-action realism and a stylized, hand-drawn comic book feel was a major technical and creative accomplishment. I am also proud of the emotional impact of the video; it successfully tells a compelling story without dialogue, relying entirely on visual storytelling and the music.

What I learned

I learned a tremendous amount about the potential and limitations of using AI in artistic production. While it can be a powerful tool for generating unique styles, it still requires significant human oversight and post-production work to achieve a refined, professional result. I also deepened my understanding of pacing and how to build tension and release in a non-linear narrative.

What's next for Shabush

I am exploring the possibility of expanding the "Shabush" universe. This could take the form of a short film, a series of music videos with a connected storyline, or even a full-fledged graphic novel. I am excited to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible by blending traditional filmmaking techniques with emerging AI technologies.
