The Story behind Our App

When we read the problem statements, the first thing that hit us were the fears that came with being overseas. Such fears include losing our items and being alone in foreign land. As such, we decided to come up with an app that has everything you might need in one place.

We decided to split our app into 2 unique interfaces to address the different aspects of living overseas: Lifestyle and Administrative.

The Lifestyle interface addresses the social needs and enables interaction between Singaporeans that are in the same overseas region. This is done by a few features, such as a forum (inspired by reddit), food recommendations and an in-app chat function. These will serve to connect Singaporeans overseas in meaningful ways and improve their quality of life, as they can fulfil their needs for social interaction and share ways to quickly integrate into the community there.

The Administrative interface addressese the painful experiences that one might have when it comes to essential protocol when going overseas. Here, we combine these painful experiences a traveller might have and guide them with a step-by-step checklist on what to do in certain situations. For short term travellers, notable situations include losing personal items and passport. For long term travellers, they can even do their visa and passport renewal in-app.

We believe that the possibilities are endless with our app. While we are targeting overseas Singaporeans, our app could easily apply to foreigners coming to study or work in Singapore. Over time, the app could see more features such as a translation feature and cash services.

Challenges we Faced

As we are extremely new to the UI/UX space, we did not know how to use any prototyping tools beforehand. We ended up spending an entire day using a wireframe interface that did not have interactive wireframes and had to pick up another tool quickly (we chose proto.io).

Accomplishments we are proud of / What we learnt

With that said, we are extremely happy that we got to explore so many tools related to UI and this experience was definitely eye-opening. Also, to map out the user journey was something that changed our perspectives to how apps are made. For instance, features are great only if people use them. Hence, it is important to consider the pain points that we are addressing.
