Inspiration
All of us in team CCBI have friends who come from a range of countries. Additionally, one of us personally went through the process of moving to Singapore to study. Putting ourselves in the shoes of someone moving away from home especially during the pandemic, helped us understand the state of mind our friends were in; the pain of leaving home and the confusion of scouring through webpages to find relevant information.
What it does
SG Study Companion aims to improve the experience of moving to Singapore in 2 main aspects.
- Practical: It brings all the relevant information regarding moving to Singapore under one platform. The information found will be personalised to the user's profile based on their country of origin as there are some nuances when coming to Singapore from different countries. It also aims to bring the news to you instead of you looking for news. The news we are referring to here are articles regarding border entry which is particularly important during the pandemic. The chat bot also functions to fill in the gaps in knowledge regarding Student Pass applications in addition to answering frequently asked questions
- Emotional SG Study Companion aims to be the ice breaker to joining the Singaporean community. Through the Students' Connect program, international students can connect with peers from any country who have also chosen to further their studies in Singapore. We think this would be a place a home-away-from-home can be fostered. Additionally, seniors may also guide their juniors through the process for coming to Singapore through posts and direct messages.
How we built it
We built it on Figma which is a prototyping platform which enabled us to create a clickable prototype of our idea.
Challenges we ran into
The challenges we faced include but are not limited to having to dig through the government websites to find the procedures of applying for a Student's Pass, looking for feedback and implementing them within a short period of time, and learning to use Figma as it was the first experience for many of us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are most proud of the minimalistic look and user-friendly interface we developed.
What we learned
On a technical level, we learnt to use a prototyping platform like Figma. Meanwhile on the soft skills level, we learnt of the steps involved in rapid prototyping which is a key factor to the the lightning fast progression of technology in the world of today.
What's next for SG Study Companion
SG companion only gears towards international students coming to Singaporean Universities at the moment. There are different types and application processes for student entering into other levels of education such as primary and secondary. So, the next step is to expand our user base to include these other levels.
