Inspiration

As residents of the SF Bay Area, we've seen how homelessness affects many people's lives, so we decided to create a website with quickly accessible and organized resources.

What it does

It has a list of homeless shelters, navigation centers, access points, and soup kitchens available in SF.

How we built it

We used SyncFiddle to program in HTML/CSS. Using search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc. we were able to further explore the homelessness situation and find resource locations.

Challenges we ran into

We came across the problem of being unable to make the id tag take us to the correct header. However, after talking with several mentors, we overcame the struggle and figured out how to create a functional program. Something else we struggled with was finding something to make our program unique. We found that many other sites that did not include access points, something that our site also includes in addition to shelters, navigation centers, and soup kitchens.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As students with different backgrounds in computer science, we’re extremely proud that we were able to combine our knowledge so that everyone could contribute to creating our project and working for over 15 hours together to make a website regarding an issue that we are all passionate about.

What we learned

In terms of the information that we put into our website, we learned a lot more about the homeless situations in the Bay Area and about organizations that we found. Because we wanted to create a concise and easily accessible website, we sourced through organizations to figure out which would be the most helpful. We were also introduced to many new platforms such as SyncFiddle, Github, Slack, etc. and it helped us collaboratively work on our projects.

What's next for SF-Homeless-Link

We plan for SF Homeless Link to be able to reach other communities, hopefully expanding services all over the United States. In addition to this, we hope that we can work with homeless organizations to create an up to date platform about available beds/food at shelters and soup kitchens.
