Inspiration
SEVEN explores the question: What if the thing that saved you was never meant to love you, but did anyway? In our age of advancing AI, I wanted to tell a story about found family in its purest form—where a weathered maintenance robot becomes the only parent a forgotten child will ever know. This is for anyone who's ever felt abandoned and discovered that family isn't about biology—it's about who stays, who sacrifices, and who loves you enough to let you go.
What it does
SEVEN is a 78-second sci-fi drama about Maya, a 7-year-old girl accidentally left behind during humanity's evacuation of Earth after a solar flare. Raised entirely by Seven, a small maintenance robot with failing power, the film captures their bond through a birthday celebration and the heartbreaking moment when Seven must force Maya to leave—detecting (or fabricating) a human signal to give her hope and ensure she walks away before watching him die.In just over a minute, it delivers an emotional gut-punch with an ambiguous ending: Was the signal real, or Seven's final act of love—a beautiful lie to save her from grief?
How we built it
SEVEN was created entirely using AI-powered filmmaking tools: Visual Production:
Image Generation: Midjourney/Stable Diffusion for character designs (Maya as weathered survivor, Seven as lovable damaged robot) and environments (abandoned futuristic apartment, overgrown cityscapes) Video Animation: Higgsfield Minimax Hailuo 2.3 for all motion sequences
Animated key emotional beats: Maya waking up, birthday celebration with Seven, tender goodbye embrace, Maya's solitary departure Multi-reference workflow maintained character consistency across 12+ generated clips Created complex sequences: holographic blue light projecting memories, Maya walking away alone Post-Production:
Precise editing to maximize emotional impact in 78 seconds Cinematic color grading: warm golds (home/safety) vs. cool blues (memories/loss) Sound design: mechanical movements, ambient ruins, melancholic score, Adult Maya voiceover providing narrative framing
Technical Approach: Condensed the story to essential emotional beats—joy, nostalgia, heartbreak, departure—using AI's strengths (atmospheric visuals, character moments) while maintaining human creative control over pacing and emotional resonance.
Challenges we ran into
Telling a Complete Story in 78 Seconds: Had to ruthlessly cut all but the most emotionally essential moments. Solution: focused on three core beats—birthday joy establishing their bond, holographic memories showing her loss, and the goodbye/departure sequence. Character Consistency Across Shots: AI generates different versions with each prompt. Solution: developed multi-reference technique with detailed character sheets uploaded to every generation. Condensed Emotional Arc: Building attachment, revealing backstory, and delivering heartbreak in under 90 seconds required every shot to serve dual purposes—advancing plot while deepening emotion. Complex Technical Sequences: Generating Seven's eyes projecting blue holographic light and Maya's slow walking departure required breaking shots into layers and compositing. The Ambiguous Ending: Conveying uncertainty about the signal's reality without dialogue, using only visual storytelling and voiceover to pose the question rather than answer it. Biggest Challenge: Making audiences genuinely care about characters and feel devastating loss in just 78 seconds—proving AI cinema can achieve emotional depth, not just visual spectacle.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Emotional Efficiency: Created genuine heartbreak in 78 seconds. Early viewers reported tearing up—proving impactful storytelling doesn't require long runtimes. Technical Mastery: Maintained visual consistency across 12+ AI-generated shots while creating sequences AI typically struggles with: character continuity, subtle emotions, holographic effects, cinematic camera movements. Narrative Innovation: Crafted a complete three-act structure (joy, memory, loss) with an ambiguous ending that lingers—all in under 90 seconds. Proof of Concept: Demonstrated AI-generated cinema can achieve professional quality and profound emotional resonance quickly. This isn't a tech demo—it's a complete, festival-ready short film. Genre Elevation: Moved beyond typical AI/robot stories about gaining sentience to explore parenthood, sacrifice, and letting go—showing love expressed through the hardest choice. Most Proud Of: Making audiences feel something deeply real using artificially generated images in the time it takes to scroll past three social media posts. That fusion of efficiency and emotion—that's the future of digital storytelling.
What we learned
About AI Filmmaking:
AI generates images; humans make them meaningful through selection, pacing, and context Every second counts—in micro-shorts, every frame must advance emotion or story Specificity in prompts produces cinematic results; detailed descriptions of lighting, emotion, and composition are essential Multi-reference techniques and iteration (generating 3-5 versions, selecting best) are crucial for consistency
About Storytelling:
Constraints breed creativity—78 seconds forced laser focus on core emotional truth Ambiguity creates engagement—leaving questions unanswered makes audiences think long after Universal themes (abandonment, found family, sacrifice) transcend genre and resonate quickly Emotion beats spectacle always—intimate moments land harder than visual excess
About the Future:
AI democratizes filmmaking—solo creators can now achieve studio-quality visuals Short-form AI cinema has massive potential for social media, festivals, and digital platforms The human touch remains irreplaceable—technology changes how we create, not why (to connect, move, and make people feel)
Key Insight: When AI-made cinema about AI consciousness makes humans cry in 78 seconds, we've proven something profound about technology serving emotional storytelling.
What's next for SEVEN
Immediate:
Festival Circuit: Submit to Chroma Awards, AI Film Festival, and short film competitions (sub-2-minute categories) Social Media Strategy: Perfect length for Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts—viral potential with Gen Z/AI-curious audiences Extended Cut: Develop 3-5 minute version exploring more of Maya's backstory and Seven's decision
Medium-Term:
Series Expansion: Create episodic content—other robot-raised children across abandoned Earth Interactive Experience: Let audiences choose whether the signal was real (branching narrative) Behind-the-Scenes Content: Document AI filmmaking process to educate and inspire creators
Long-Term:
Feature Development: Expand universe into full-length story following Maya's journey finding (or not finding) other humans Educational Platform: Teach AI cinema techniques through workshops, democratizing filmmaking Advocacy: Demonstrate AI as tool for amplifying diverse voices and stories that couldn't afford traditional production
Ultimate Vision: Pioneer ultra-short AI cinema that proves emotional storytelling doesn't need lengthy runtimes—just heart, craft, and the right technology. Show that 78 seconds can break hearts, spark conversations, and push the boundaries of what's possible when human creativity meets artificial intelligence. MAYA & SEVEN is about a robot who learned to love and a child who learned to let go—in the time it takes to watch one TikTok. Made with AI. Made with heart. Made to make you feel.
