Inspiration

As co-op students, we travel all over North America for our positions, and finding a good place to stay in cities you have never lived in is hard. The issue is made worse by the fact that finding information on the best places to live in a city is time consuming, and it's expensive to hire someone to do it for you.

What it does

settlr allows you to enter information about yourself, such as where your job is, the size of your family, preferred method of transportation, budget, and using this info, extrapolates the best neighbourhoods in the city for YOU to live now, and in the future.

How we built it

We use criteria from each city's open data set as factors in the overall evaluation of a neighbourhood, such as housing prices, assigning them a weight based on what you will find most critical (transportation availability if you don't have a car). Data from previous years is also evaluated to analyze the growth or shrink rates in these factors as well, in order to predict the future of this neighbourhood. We then map these neighbourhoods on an ArcGIS map, with each one categorized by colour based on their score, and display the top 5 results, along with additional details on the side.

Challenges we ran into

We were not very familiar with Open Data sets, real estate, or the apis used before starting the projects, which caused us to have a slow start, but we quickly adapted. Our domain request also got rejected somehow.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Learning and using a platform as complicated and intricate as ArcGIS.

What we learned

We improved both our knowledge of web application development, honing our backend and front end skills.

What's next for settlr

Aggregating user matches to provide to the city, real estate agents, and urban planners.
