What inspired us
Sethe Eggstra Ventures was born from a passion for sustainable agriculture and a desire to support local food systems. In many communities, access to fresh, healthy, and ethically produced eggs is limited. I wanted to bridge that gap by creating a business that not only supplies high-quality eggs but also empowers smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth, with entrepreneurial opportunities.
What it does
Sethe Eggstra Ventures is a social agribusiness that focuses on egg production, packaging, and distribution. We work with local farmers, providing them with training, resources, and support to raise healthy poultry. The eggs are collected, processed under hygienic conditions, and distributed to local markets, schools, and homes — ensuring access to affordable nutrition while creating income opportunities.
How we built it
We started with a small pilot program, working with just a few farmers and a modest poultry setup. Using local materials and sustainable practices, we built coops, implemented feeding and vaccination schedules, and developed branding for our egg cartons. We also built a simple web platform where customers can place orders and track delivery.
Challenges we ran into
• Raising initial funding for equipment and feed.
• Educating farmers on best practices and disease prevention.
• Navigating logistics and delivery challenges in rural areas.
• Creating awareness and trust in our brand among customers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
• 🐣 Successfully launched our first production cycle, raising and maintaining a healthy flock with a 95% egg-laying rate. • 🧺 Packaged and sold over [insert number] eggs to local households and small businesses within our first [X] months of operation. • 🌱 Trained [insert number] local farmers, including women and youth, in sustainable poultry farming practices — some of whom have started their own micro-farms. • 🤝 Built strong relationships with local markets, schools, and food vendors to ensure a stable demand pipeline. • 📦 Branded and introduced our egg cartons with food safety labeling and sustainability messaging, helping set us apart in the market. • 💬 Received positive community feedback — many customers appreciate the freshness, affordability, and ethical sourcing of our eggs. • 📈 Reinvested our first profits into expanding our coop and improving feeding and health systems.
What we learned
• Community involvement is key to success.
• Small-scale innovations (like QR codes on cartons for traceability) can build customer trust.
• It’s possible to merge social impact with profitability.
• Flexibility and adaptability are crucial when working with livestock and supply chains.
What's next for Sethe Eggstra ventures
We plan to scale up production, onboard more farmers, and expand our delivery range. We’re also exploring partnerships with schools and hospitals to provide regular egg supplies. Additionally, we’re working on a mobile app to connect farmers, customers, and delivery services more efficiently.
