Service HUB

Inspiration

Our goal for Service HUB was to connect college students with their most requested services on and off campus and create it entirely using only Pega 8.7 App Studio. The most in demand services were centered around improving academics, providing a safe campus and impacting their community through volunteer and service learning such as improving food production and access to clean water.

What it does

Service HUB allows college campuses to centralize their student service requests and provide opportunities for the campus community to improve their surrounding communities through volunteer and service learning. This project aimed to create a centralized place for tutoring, security requests and volunteering called Service HUB.

How we built it

Service HUB was created entirely using Pega 8.7 App Studio only. We created a Service Request base class that had the common information and views which was inherited by the tutor request, volunteer request and security request child cases. We used an approval/reject automation step as part of the volunteer requests and wait steps on the tutoring requests. We built a complex data landing page that included several reusable views on the case type. We also built a manager portal for overall case management and case monitoring of assignments and routing. There are also science tutor and math tutoring portals for tutors to work the tutor requests.

Challenges we ran into

It was challenging to stay entirely in App Studio. We had to take time to review, apply and maximize the currently available functionality in 8.7 App Studio to the design process of our case types and configuration of the business processes. We were committed to only using 8.7 App Studio in a low code environment so we had to investigate the full capabilities of App Studio to build a production ready application.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proudest of having a fully functional, production ready and scalable framework built solely in App Studio. Using the Cosmos UI framework we were able to build a complex, professional user interface without writing any code. We also built a mobile app portal. We are also proud of using the visual tools available to create the data model and data objects in our application.

What we learned

Exactly what App Studio can do to solve a business problem. App Studio is a very powerful tool and is an easy to use tool to build a process using a low code solution to solve a business requirement. App Studio allows users to re-use data objects and views to quickly build additional processes. Having the code built for you saves tons of time and effort.

What's next for Service HUB

In MLP2, we want to:

Provide an option for students to create cases themselves.
Include a medical request case type
Develop a rideshare option
Create a used textbook exchange
Connect students with mission trips based on their interests
Further build out the security and volunteer portals
Add additional tutoring subjects (such as: English, History, Philosophy, Psychology)
Configure a web mashup interface
