Serve DC, an app by Rays of Sunshine (Alessandra)
Serve DC is a community app that makes it easy for neighbors to ask for help, share resources, or post alerts safely and anonymously. Posts are automatically categorized, and optional location tagging helps neighbors respond quickly.
Inspiration
I wanted to create something that would bring neighbors together and make helping easy and safe. With the recent snowstorm, residents of Washington D.C. have faced more difficulties than ever, from blocked streets to urgent needs for supplies, and small community connections can make a big difference in these situations. Serve DC is designed to allow neighbors to support each other when they need it most.
What it does
- Create and browse posts for urgent help, safety alerts, giveaways, or announcements

How I built it
- Typescript
- Google Maps for location features
- Features: auto-categorization, pseudo-anonymous posting, “seen vs new” alerts
Challenges
- Balancing privacy and location
- Making posting fast and simple
- Auto-categorizing posts reliably to avoid unnecessary categories
Accomplishments
