Inspiration

The increasing number of college students suffering from mental illness was our inspiration. We wanted to create an app that could help college students to manage their mental health.

What it does

Physical Fitness and Nutritious Meals are very important factors that impact mental health. So our app has a feature of setting a weekly physical fitness goals and nutritious meal plans to help students manage their health. Everytime students achieve their goal, their brain character will grow and become their motivations. Also, our app is going to affiliated with school accounts so student can access to their dining hall meal menu, school resources related to mental health and physical activities.

How we built it

First, we created a survey for user research. Based on the results collected, we created a user persona and site map. After the site map, we were able to create a low and mid-fidelity wireframe using figma. Then, our team established a style guide with colors, logo, fonts, components, and inspriation photos. Then, using the style guide, we created a high-fidelity wireframe.

Challenges we ran into

Our group was planning to do a competitor analysis. However, different from what we expected, not many users who answered the survey were using the physical activity tracking app nor meal tracking app. So, we had to focus on reasons why they aren’t using those apps. Since we hadn’t had any options to compare with other apps, it was hard to know which function we should prioritize in our app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It was the first time participating in designathon for all of our group members. We were worried if we couldn’t come out with a final product. However, we are proud that we are able to gather data, create site map, low/mid-fi, and high-fi in less than 48hours. Also, we came out with an app that included all of the features we wanted, so we are very proud of our overall accomplishment of this project.

What we learned

We learned that when making questions for the survey, it is important to ask a specific questions. When creating a user persona and site-map, it was little bit hard to create because the data we collected was very limited. Since the app should be created based on what user’s expect, it is important to know user’s niche very specfically.

What's next for Serenity

The next step is to make Serenity into an app that people in all age range can use it. Since the current app is for college students, we want to expand the app with feature that any people can use to manage their mental health through setting physical activity and nutrition goals. We hope that Serenity can be a great help in society to reduce the number of people suffering from mental illness.

What is the problem your solution addresses?

Being a college student is stressful — we can relate! Between schoolwork, classes, clubs, internships, jobs, friendships, and just college life in general, it’s common for college students to struggle with prioritizing their mental health and managing their stress. That is where our app comes in handy: Through tailored resources and features, it encourages users to prioritize their mental well-being amidst the chaos of college life. The app serves as a personal companion in managing daily challenges, offering strategies for stress relief and fostering a healthy balance between academic pursuits and personal growth.

Why did you pick this solution, and how does it address the problem?

Our solution is designed specifically for college students, making mental and physical health management convenient and engaging. The app encourages personal growth ("growing the brain") through a visual brain avatar that expands with progress in nutrition, fitness, and mental health. For nutrition, we introduce a "Nutrient of the Day" (i.e. Vitamin A, Vitamin B, protein, etc) and integrate university dining hall meal data, rewarding users when they consume meals rich in the featured daily nutrient. In the mental health segment, we offer mood check-ins and tailored recommendations from university resources, aiding in overcoming common challenges like homesickness or academic stress. Completing these recommendations results in brain growth. Lastly, our physical fitness feature allows users to set and track fitness goals, contributing further to their brain avatar's development. Our innovative approach aims to motivate students to consistently care for their well-being in a fun manner!
