Serenity: Your Mental Health Companion
Inspiration
Mental health is a universal need, yet support for it remains limited and stigmatized, especially for both men and women facing unique societal challenges. Serenity was designed to break down these barriers, providing compassionate and accessible support to both genders. Men’s mental health is often stigmatized and overlooked, while women face distinct emotional and psychological challenges, making it vital to empower them with tailored tools and resources. Aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 - to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls - Serenity aims to foster resilience, reduce stigma, and promote equal access to mental health support.
Additionally, the choice of using K-VRC, the robot from the Netflix series Love, Death + Robots, was inspired by its compassionate and approachable nature. The orange robot, particularly from the "Three Robots" episode, brought a sense of warmth and ease, making the characters seem more relatable and caring. Watching the episode, I even forgot about my own worries and exams, and I hope that Serenity users will experience the same sense of comfort and relief, momentarily forgetting their mental health struggles as they interact with K-VRC.
What It Does
Serenity serves as a mental health companion and provides a range of support options through K-VRC, our AI-powered chatbot. Key features include:
- Human-like Responses Using Gemini AI: Leveraging a fine-tuned version of Google’s Gemini AI, K-VRC offers empathetic, conversational support tailored to individual needs.
- Crisis Support: Serenity includes options for immediate contact with suicide prevention and women’s helplines to ensure users are never left alone in critical moments.
- User-Friendly Interface: Designed for a frictionless, intuitive experience, the UI/UX aims to keep users engaged and comfortable in seeking mental health support.
- Community Support: Using Firebase's real-time database, Serenity allows users to connect with others facing similar challenges, creating a community of shared empathy and resilience. Additionally, K-VRC can participate in community chats, offering guidance, resources, and support within group discussions to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment.
- Voice Chat Feature: K-VRC can interact via voice, making Serenity accessible to users who prefer speaking over typing.
- Guided Meditation & Breathing Exercises: For users needing calm, Serenity includes guided practices for relaxation and stress management.
- Feedback Page: Users can provide feedback to continually improve the experience.
How We Built It
Our primary tools included:
- Gemini AI for empathetic and responsive AI conversations.
- Firebase for saving chats and community support, utilizing real-time databases to enable group engagement.
- Google AI Studio for fine-tuning the chatbot and refining the meditation and breathing guidance features.
- Vercel for seamless deployment.
Through AI integration, Serenity harnesses the full potential of Google’s tools to make mental health support more accessible and empathetic.
Challenges We Ran Into
One of our key objectives for Serenity was to enhance the quality of information provided by K-VRC by utilizing Gemini's "grounding with Google Search" capability. This feature would allow the chatbot to pull in factual, real-time responses and include relevant sources—such as YouTube videos and reputable online resources—that users could reference for deeper learning or additional support. Unfortunately, as this feature is only available for premium-tier users, we were unable to implement it within our current resources. This limitation presented a challenge, as we wanted to create a more dynamic, knowledge-based support experience, but we worked around it by focusing on other aspects of empathy and resourcefulness in our AI responses.
What We Learned
Working on Serenity taught us the immense potential of AI in creating positive social impact. We gained experience in using Google AI technologies and building a solution that is not only functional but also transformative in terms of its emotional support capabilities. Above all, we learned the importance of user-centered design and community engagement in addressing mental health needs.
