Inspiration

We were inspired by the millions of seniors that live in economic insecurity around the world. Many do not have access to healthcare, and others have limited health literacy. In these situations, everyday issues are often left ignored, which develop into bigger problems later on in a senior’s life.

What it does

This chatbot service helps seniors address everyday concerns about their health. It provides essential support without any financial burden on seniors. It can diagnose a wide range of common health issues. The AI model engages with users, making it easy for seniors to communicate, and has a text to speech feature. The website is clear, with simple instructions and advice for seniors.

How we built it

  • Backend Page directory built with flask
  • Developed with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • For NLP AI tools, a custom GPT4 Assistant was developed on OpenAI, then integrated into the website
  • Used Web Speech API for the text to speech and speech to text feature
  • Used Fetch API to get a username and password from the user

Challenges we ran into

  • Rethinking our idea multiple times
  • Issues with the Chat bot
  • Having to switch from an app to a website

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Completing everything we set out to do
  • Making our website accessible for seniors with disabilities
  • Working on a real world problem
  • The smart quick decisions made
  • The overal GUI

What we learned

More than anything, we learned the process of software development in a team, startup-type environment. Our team of four developed a medical solution website with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python, powered by a custom-developed GPT-4 assistant AI API. We learned a lot throughout the process. Technically, we figured out how to seamlessly integrate GPT-4 into our web app, handle API requests and responses, and use Python for the back-end. We sharpened our front-end skills, building a dynamic user interface with vanilla JavaScript, and managed data flow with Flask. Along the way, we tackled various challenges related to API integration and data handling and improved our UX/UI design through user testing and iterations.

What's next for Serenity

To ensure the sustainability of the app, we will leverage brand deals to keep the service free for seniors. This will be supported by social media campaigns that raise awareness about the challenges seniors face and highlight the benefits of using Serenity.

Furthermore, we are committed to continually enhancing the accessibility and functionality of the service. Future improvements include developing a mobile application for both Android and iOS platforms, integrating the ability to contact doctors through Serenity’s AI, and expanding language options for both the website and the AI, ensuring that we can serve a diverse senior population effectively.

Overall, we aim to grow into an organization that directly supports seniors who struggle with financial costs through dedicated programs we will establish. After contributing so much throughout their lives, it’s important they have the resources to enjoy their golden years with peace of mind.
