Inspiration

An estimated 26% of people aged 18 and older – roughly one out of every four adults – suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in any given year. Stigma continues to be a problem for many people who suffer from mental illnesses. Even though society recognizes this as a problem, people continue to hold negative beliefs that cause those in need to avoid care. I wanted to contribute to the creation of something that has the potential to change the disheartening statistics associated with mental health stigma.

What it does

Serene is a website that allows users to unwind and relax. Our mission is to #BreakTheStigma. It is critical to break the stigma because it serves as a form of suicide prevention. You will be able to help someone in your life recover and seek professional help if you educate yourself about mental health and suicide prevention, as well as take steps to combat stigma. Mental illness is treatable and recoverable. Our interactive features would encourage users to be more open while also reassuring them that they are not alone.

  • The Journal Entry Zone: This Javascript-based feature is an excellent stress management tool that lessens the impact of physical stressors on your health. It allows emotional release and helps the brain regulate emotions. It increases one's self-esteem and confidence. Users can submit multiple entries, which are saved to help them track their mood!
  • Interactive text based game: Playing games can help ease stress. We all have different ways of unwinding, and for many people, immersing themselves in a game is an excellent way to cope with and gain perspective on the stresses of daily life. Serene's game was developed using JavaScript and HTML.

How we built it

I mainly used HTML and JavaScript for the features.

Challenges we ran into

Figuring out the game's components was a little complicated, and it was also very difficult to complete everything on time, but I did it all by myself!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am so proud to have developed a project that can affect real-world change.

What we learned

I learned how to improve a website's design by incorporating JavaScript into several elements to make it more user friendly and interactive.

What's next for Serene

I intend to officially launch this website by the end of 2023, with the goal of reaching 10,000 users. I also intend to promote my mission on social media and add new features to the website.
