Inspiration
Our project introduces a way for users to have an efficient and organized studying session. Previous apps that we, as students, have personally tried lacked the ability to determine a needed time for breaks in addition to studying time. A systematic solution to this is the Pomodoro technique of studying. It implements a healthy format of work time combined with down time. We hope that through our project, users will be able to track their tasks and work in a more organized and efficient environment.
What it does
SereneStudy is a timing program that not only allows users to input the amount of time desired for their study/to-do session, but also lets them make a checklist of tasks for further organization. While the timer is counting off, users can see, simultaneously, what task corresponds to the current time interval. The program also makes use of the Pomodoro technique, efficiently combining work time and down time. The time set by the user is also flexible, meaning if a task is finished early, they can move on early. Furthermore, the user can also enjoy a spark of motivation with our provided quotes of inspiration displayed during the work times.
How we built it
Serene Study was created with the use of Android Studio and Java. Jessica and Jason were in charge of the design of the app, while Tzuching was in charge of working on the back end of the app. Having set roles allowed us to work on the project in a faster pace. For the timer on the app, we used the Countdown Timer class to make sure that the app was functional.
Challenges we ran into
This was the first time the members of our group used methods pertaining to time, so we had lots of difficulty communicating and making sure that the app worked. Making sure that the timer worked took up a majority of our time due to the amount of bugs that appeared.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our group is proud that we are able to build and complete an entire app in the span of two days. As this was our group's very first hackathon, we are happy to complete a mobile app after working for two long days to include difficult components such as a timer.
What we learned
Our team learned a lot about various different resources online that could help us with any future projects. These resources included different libraries that could assist us with our projects so that we could include different features in our app without much difficulty.
What's next for Serene Study
We would like to improve the user experience by adding more user options such as being able to adjust the background color and being able to play lofi music. As there was limited time to complete this project, we hope to add these features in the future.
